Leader Profile:
This week’s Leader Profile attribute is SOCIAL AWARENESS.
When you are ready to lead, you have the ability to understand others’ emotions and meet the needs and concerns of others around you. You think about how your word and actions will affect others. You take the time to notice how others are feeling. By doing these things, you are using the leader attribute, Social Awareness.
This weeks “I will” statement: “I will be socially aware with how my actions will affect everyone around me.”

From Our Nurse: 5th Grade Girls Spinal Screening Notification
Dear Parent/Guardian:
This school’s Health Services will be conducting spinal screenings for all 5th grade girls on December 7, 2018. The purpose of spinal screening is to detect the signs of abnormal curves of the spine at the earliest stage so that the need for treatment can be determined.
Scoliosis, a common spinal abnormality found in adolescents, is a sideways twisting of the spine. It is usually detected in children between 10 and 14 years of age. Kyphosis, sometimes called round back, is an exaggerated rounding of the upper back and is often confused with poor posture. Many cases of curvature of the spine are mild and require only ongoing observation by a physician when they are first diagnosed. Others can worsen as the child grows and may require active treatment such as bracing or surgery. Early treatment can prevent the development of a severe deformity, which can affect a person's health and appearance.
The procedure for screening is simple. Screeners who have been specially trained will look at your child's back while she stands and then bends forward. For this examination, girls are requested to wear a halter-top , or a bathing suit top. Parents will be notified of the results of the screening ONLY if a second professional opinion is advisable. This screening procedure does not replace your child's need for regular health care and check-ups.
According to state law, ALL girls in grades 5th and 7th, and ALL boys will be screened in 8th grade. If, for religious reasons, you do not wish to have your child screened, you are required to fill out the EXEMPTION: SPINAL SCREENING FOR RELIGIOUS REASONS form, have it notarized, and return it to the school nurse on or before the day of the screening. Students who do not present a signed, notarized form will be screened.
Screening Date: December 7, 2018
Thank you,
Wendy Santos RN
