One Body in Christ: Our Spiritual Theme
Rights and Responsibilities
Spiritual Reflection
By Sheila O’Callaghan
We have had some bright warm days in the past two weeks. However, nature will soon turn down the heat. The trees are giving up their leaves and they are about to hold up dark empty branches to the sky. By the end of the month, we will need our cold weather clothes.
At this time of the year we remember to pray for those who have died. We thank God for the harvest and all good things of the earth. Our prayers must be offered for those who suffer the most: the poor, the hungry, the homeless, the jobless, and those who have no one to care for them.
We hope our hearts will be filled with God’s love and ask the Holy Spirit to help us share what we can with those in need.
During this week and next we will remember several saints who are women.
The 13th of November is the memorial of St. Frances Cabrini. Her memorial is not celebrated this year because Sunday takes precedence. Mother Cabrini was the first American to be named a saint. Mother Cabrini came from Italy to work with Italian immigrants who came to America for a better life. She had great wisdom as well as love. She founded an order of sisters and opened hospitals.
St. Margaret of Scotland is memorialized on November 16. She was an English princess who married the King of Scotland. She became a great queen. She was smart, prayerful, kind, and energetic. She wrote new laws and she helped reform the church. She was very generous and helped people in need. She is the patron saint of Scotland.
November 17, is the memorial of Elizabeth, queen of Hungary. Elizabeth had a happy married life and she and her husband had three children. Elizabeth did things with her whole heart. What she did most was spend money to help the sick and homeless. When her husband died, her brother-in-law tried to lock her up. She went to a convent and gave herself to prayer.
We have another American saint, Rose Philippine Duchesne. She took a group of Sacred Heart sisters from France to St. Charles, Missouri, to open schools. She opened a school in Kansas for Native Americans. She was a model of God’s wisdom. She was called “the woman who prays always.”
The memorial of St. Albert the Great is celebrated on November 15. He was a great thinker and writer. St. Thomas Aquinas was his student at the University of Paris. They became good friends. It is not easy being a thinker. They were criticized for their new ideas about religion. But later their ideas became very popular.
November is a great month to help us become more aware of the needs of others. Let us use our wisdom, love and kindness to reach out and help those in need.
Happy Veteran’s Day to all those who served and fought for our country.
Please pray for the sick, especially Fr. Mink, Fr. Jasper’s mother, Patrick Flanagan, and all the sick of our parish. Our Armed Forces and First Responders need our prayers. Please pray for them.

Let's help Catholic Charities provide available services to the needy in our Diocese.
Did you know that one out of every 10 residents of the Diocese receive at least one service each year from Catholic Charities?
Last year, Catholic Charities assisted more than 30,700 individuals in Delaware and Maryland’s Eastern Shore with a variety of essential services including food, clothing, energy assistance, residential and behavioral health programs. Catholic Charities also runs the Bayard House which is the only licensed residential program in Delaware providing food, shelter, and direct care to at-risk, homeless, pregnant, and newly parenting teens and young women. With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the needs of those served by Catholic Charities have risen exponentially.
Your help is crucial!
The 2022 St. Ann School Annual Fund
The St. Ann School Annual Fund was established in 2018 as a way to support the mission of the school and secure the legacy of Catholic education for future students of the school.
This is a restricted fund and is used solely for our students. This year, the Annual Fund will be used to purchase new educational software for our HD interactive smart boards as well purchasing new iPads and Chromebooks for the classrooms.
The Annual Fund Campaign concludes in December 2022. Please consider making a gift online here or by check or securities payable to the St. Ann School Annual Fund. All gifts received by December 31, 2022 qualify for a charitable deduction for the 2022 tax year.
