Walk and Roll to School Day - October 12
As part of Berlyn's Health, Wellness, and Safety Initiatives, we will be participating in Walk and Roll to School Day. This is an event designed to highlight and support students having a safe route to school, while also engaging in the healthy activity of walking.
We are hoping you will make this a family even and join us!
We are encouraging students, families, and staff to Walk (and Roll) to school on October 12, 2022. As part of this event, we will also be highlighting a special menu item at breakfast (Yogurt Banana Split) for students, and offer the first 100 family members who come a Yogurt Parfait. Live too far away or take the bus, it's OK- we understand- you can come and participate in our Fitness Friends Program from 7:45-7:55!
Schedule
7:00-7:20: We are encouraging those who can to walk (or roll) to school!
7:20-7:45: Special Breakfast for Students; Healthy Treat for Families (First 100 people)
7:45-7:55: Fitness Friends Program- Walk some laps or come to the outside stage for a dance party!
8:05-8:20: Morning Assembly - Special Announcement (Outside Stage)
As a reminder, I am including some information from our Parent Handbook as a reminder about some of the way we encourage being healthy at Berlyn:
- The Ontario-Montclair School District recognizes the link between student health and learning, and has developed a Local Wellness Policy for the district that will promote student health and create a healthy learning environment for students.
- To maximize instructional time and ensure the health and safety of all our students there will be no food items allowed in classrooms other than what is provided by our district.
- Printed meal menus will not be provided to students. The menus are available online and can be emailed to you if you sign up here: https://omsdnutrition.com/index.php?sid=1401100212041689&page=automenu
- As a safety measure in response to COVID-19, to limit the spread of germs between students, we are requesting parents to send their child to school with a personal waterbottle.
- While parents have a choice in what items to send their child to eat, due to safety risks, snacks and/or meals provided from either home or school are not to be shared.
- In addition, buying or selling of items – food or otherwise, unless part of a school fundraiser – is prohibited.
If you would like to celebrate a special event (such as a birthday), only pre-packaged items that can be sent home with students will be accepted. We strongly encourage only sending non-food items. Please check with your student's teacher prior to sending.

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and Wellness
SELF-MANAGEMENT: Mindfulness and Stress Management
During the month of October, your child’s SEL instruction will focus on Self-Management skills learning about mindfulness practices and stress management. Stress can affect health, behavior, thoughts, and feelings. Recognizing and developing strategies for managing stress in healthy ways can lead to life-long physical and psychological well-being. This month, students will engage in activities to help them effectively regulate their emotions, control impulses, and manage stress. These activities help build emotional awareness, reflection, and calming skills.
