The Gates Mills Gazette
November 22, 2019
On behalf of the entire Gates Mills School family, we wish all of you a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday! Please enjoy this time with family and friends, and know that we appreciate all that you do to support our students and our school! Just a reminder that next week we are closed on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for the Thanksgiving Holiday. School will resume on Monday, December 2nd. There will not be a newsletter next week.
Holiday Family Night
Believe it or not, we are nearly ready for the Gates Mills Holiday Family Night! This year’s concert will take place on Thursday, December 12th. Students should be in their classrooms by 6:40pm, with the program beginning promptly at 7pm. Each class will sing, and we will have audience participation! Traditionally, students dress up for this concert. Girls should wear skirts or dresses, and boys should wear dress pants and a collared shirt or a sweater. Holiday attire is encouraged, such as snowflake sweaters or Santa hats.
In each class, there will be certain students who have special instrument parts or other jobs to do. If your child will not be attending our concert, please let me know as soon as possible so I can make appropriate arrangements. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
If you have questions about the Holiday Concert, please contact Mrs. Hall at 995-7412 or e-mail her at RHall@mayfieldschools.org.

Inside the Idea Lab
On November 21 in Idea Lab we read The Great Thanksgiving Escape by Mark Fearing. This is a funny book about a Thanksgiving family gathering from a child’s perspective. All grades enjoyed it and we followed it up with an activity packet from the publisher based on the events in the book. Please ask your students to share their list of things they are thankful for! After our Thanksgiving activities we had book checkout featuring our genre of the month, historical fiction, as well as history and Thanksgiving books.
With the holidays rapidly approaching, we have some fun library activities planned. Mark your calendars for December 18 which will be POLAR EXPRESS DAY for the whole school! We will read The Polar Express and do a related craft in library that day. If you are not familiar with the story, a boy is picked up by a magical train and carried to the North Pole. In the story, all the children are wearing their pajamas since they were picked up at night. Students may wear PAJAMAS to school that day if they so choose. Some classes may also watch the movie version of the book in their classrooms.
Our next library day will be the Monday after Thanksgiving break. Please help your children remember their library books that day! I hope you’ll spend some time reading with your child over the break. Thank you, and Happy Thanksgiving!
It's Cold Weather Time Again!
Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately to participate in outdoor recess (i.e., coat, hat, gloves, boots, snow pants, etc.). As stated in the handbook: All students are expected to go outside unless the temperature is below 20 degrees or the wind chill is below 10 degrees. Generally, if a child is able to ride the bus and attend school, (s)he should also be able to outside at recess. The only exceptions are: a physician’s request, a written parent request for the day the child returns to school following an illness, or a request by the teacher or Principal. We have a limited amount of clothing for students to change into should they get wet or muddy outside, so please consider sending in an extra set of clothing for their children.
