Poetry Genre TDQ lesson
I used a great lesson from readworks.org to help students differentiate between narrative and lyric poetry. We discussed the different types of poetry and how poems can be classified as a narrative poem or a lyric poem. I modeled the lesson using two Shel Silverstein poems and used a story elements checklist to determine the type of poem. For our first read, we practiced the skill of categorizing the poem and we clarified the main ideas of the poem. On our second reading, we noticed the text features and if the poem contained story elements or not. On our final reading, we explored inferences within the text and determined if that helped to categories our poem as narrative or lyric. I have included some pictures below.
