JAN 20 Update
MOHEGAN SCHOOL RECOGNIZED
I am pleased to announce that Mohegan School has been named a "School of Distinction" for the 2021- 2022 school year by the Connecticut State Department of Education. This recognition is given to schools in the top 10 percent of the state for their performance and/or growth as measured by the Connecticut Next Generation Accountability System. Mohegan School was recognized for our student growth.
The Next Generation Accountability Standards rate schools based on twelve indicators that help paint a picture of how well a school is preparing its students for future success. The system moves beyond test scores and provides a more diverse picture of school performance, looking at not only assessment performance, but also graduation rates, attendance, physical fitness, arts access, and academic growth over time.
It is especially exciting to earn this recognition coming out of the pandemic. I want to give special recognition to Mrs. Darla Lucier, the former principal at Mohegan, for accomplishing this tremendous feat. We appreciate the hard work of the entire school staff, our students and our families in helping us achieve this recognition.
Midyear testing is winding down. Students have done a tremendous job on their assessments and they should be proud of themselves for all their hard work. Teachers will use this data to focus their instruction going forward.
I’d like to welcome our new Occupational Therapist, Melissa Grich, to Mohegan Elementary School. She is taking over for Cheryl Weber who retired at the end of December. We are looking forward to working with her.

LOOK FOR THE GOOD
This week we started the Gratitude Campaign at Mohegan Elementary School. Students have been writing what they are grateful for on sticky notes daily. They are also saying them out loud as they walk through the halls at designated points in the hallways. Feel free to check out the Look for the Good website for more information and free resources.
JUMP ROPE 4 HEART
Mr. Napoli is running our annual Jump Rope 4 Heart fundraiser. This raises money for the American Heart Association. Last year, Mohegan Elementary School finished 3rd in the state of Connecticut! You can either donate online or send in a check/cash with your child to school. A flier was sent home with all students this week. You can sign up at: heart.org/KHC, or download the app on your phone or device: Kids Heart Challenge.
If we reach our goal of $28,000, the students will duct tape Mr. Coppola to the wall! We have already raised over $5,000 this week only, so keep donating!
Earlier this week, we began a new procedure in the event that a bus is not running one morning. Communication will be sent out by 7AM, as usual. However, if you need a bus to come back and pick up your child, you must call the school by 8:15AM. We will then notify the bus company which stops have children at them that need to be transported to school. If you choose to drop your child off at school, you do not need to call the school.
K-2 READING WORKSHOP
Due to an overwhelming response from parents, we are no longer accepting RSVPs for the K-2 Reading Workshop on February 6th. Parents who already submitted their RSVPs will get a reminder email from Mrs. Festa a few days prior to the workshop. This event is intended for parents and we ask that children do not attend if possible. A lot of information will be given out and we want our participants to get the most out of their time there.
If you still wish to attend and haven’t RSVP’d, please send in your sheet to school, or email Mrs. Festa at firstname.lastname@example.org. She will keep a wait list and if there is enough interest, we may run another workshop later this year. A workshop for parents of students in Grades 3 and 4 will run later this year.
Open Enrollment for the 2023-2024 school year for Kindergarten Registration will take place from February 1st to March 1st. Please contact the secretaries in the main office to schedule a registration appointment.
Mohegan PTO is prepping for their big Fun Run fundraiser that will happen in the spring. Part of the program is to provide an item of spirit wear to EVERY student in our school for the day of the event. They are looking for businesses to sponsor the shirts. If you know a potential sponsor, please have them email email@example.com or check out the Mohegan PTO Facebook page for details. There will also be flyers sent home with details. The PTO is looking for a commitment from Sponsors by Feb 1st.
The next PTO meeting will be Tuesday, February 7th. Superintendent of Schools Ken Saranich may be stopping by to discuss the school budget.
The Sweetheart Dance will be Friday, February 10th at Vazzano's in Stratford from 6-9PM. MA flier was sent home this past week with information.
No new fliers this week.
Enjoy your weekend!
