St. Luke Weekly Memo
September 14-21, 2017
EICS Theme
In the sixth chapter of the book of Isaiah, we hear of Isaiah's call to become a Prophet. God says "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?" Isaiah answers with a confident "Here I am Lord, send me." We too are called by Jesus to share his Good News to all. In the words of Pope Francis, we are called to become "missionary disciples." Jesus asks each of us to take his message of love, mercy, forgiveness and redemption into a world that is at times unwilling to hear. We are called to our missionary discipleship through both word and action; through an interior life of faith, and an exterior concern for the good of others in our community. This is the challenge of each Catholic, each Christian, each human; the challenge for all our Elk Island Catholic School community. Challenge Accepted.
School News
Birthday Book
Elk Island Catholic has updated their nutrition administrative procedure (AP) which encourages all of us to focus on healthy eating and an active life style. This connects well with our school being an APPLE School and promoting healthy eating, physical activity, and mental health habits.
As a strategy to help us avoid 'choose least often' foods being sent in for birthday celebrations we ask you to consider donating a book if you would like to mark your child's birthday. You can choose a book, request a suggestion from Mrs. Hill (our librarian) or send $10 to cover the cost of a book provided by the school. We will put a birthday label inside the front cover of the book and your child will be the first to check out the new library book.
Digital Citizenship
As students continue to use technology we need to continue to educate and guide them in proper use. As Mr. Driedger, our technology lead, said, "the internet is an amazing and amazingly-scary place, and we can't expect students to just 'know' how to behave online." Here is a website that is a wonderful resource to help guide parents with technology. https://www.commonsensemedia.org/#

Bottle Drive
Parent Council collected bottles last year to raise money for our water filling station in the hallway by the science lab. Last year $2800 was raised towards the goal of $3500. We are so close to our goal and need your help! We are asking families to bring their summer bottles with you to the Welcome Back BBQ on September 20. We can store some bottles at the school leading up the BBQ.
