Book Fair

The Elementary book fair is next week, in the Elementary Presentation Room. This is a great opportunity to expand students' personal libraries and help them grow as readers. 1D's shopping day is on Monday, October 12.

Wednesday October 14th and Thursday October 15th, the Book Fair will be open to all parents from 7:40am - 3:30pm or until quantities are gone

There will be lots of fantastic titles not available in Doha. Prices rage from 15 QR to 80 QR. Please note, students will have to use cash to purchase books, we cannot use the Dragon Bracelets at the book fair.

Halloween Carnival

This year our SPOOKTACULAR Halloween Carnival will be held at ASD on Tuesday October 27th from 5:30-7:30pm. All students Pre-K - Grade 5 are invited to attend. We need parent volunteers! If you interested in helping please fill out the form sent home with your child or contact

Tickets will be sold BEFORE the carnival. Ticket forms will be sent home Thursday October 15th. This event is for ASD students and their families ONLY.

Pumpkin Patch

The annual Pumpkin Patch will be held in the Administration Foyer from Sunday, October 25th - Tuesday, October 27th from 7:30am - 3:30pm. This is a cash ONLY event that everyone really enjoys and is a great opportunity to do some Halloween shopping. Items available include fun gadgets, yummy treats, pumpkins and decorations.

Big Idea: making predictions, conversing about books, assessment

We have been enjoying reading with partners, as well as reading independently. I have been working to get to know 1D's students' learning needs better, and finding books to suit each individual. Beginning next week, we will be building in more small-group rotations of targeted activities into the regular routines.

Home reading books are on their way more formally next week too. I have had to re-think some organization in the classroom to enable the students to shop for 'good fit' books independently and effectively.

"There is no app to replace your lap. Read to your child."

As our illustration unit draws towards a close, we will be working on Revising and Editing strategies. Students will choose one of their pieces of writing to 'fancy up' and publish.

Two helpful acronyms we will be learning are:

  • ARMS (Add, Remove, Move and Substitute) for Revising, and
  • CUPS (Capitals, Usage, Punctuation and Spelling) for Editing

Big Ideas:

We can count on using the number path to find an unknown part.

We can solve 'take away with result unknown' math stories.

We can solve 'take apart with addend unknown' math stories.

We can solve math stories relating addition and subtraction.

Social Studies

This week we will be reviewing the values we have discussed this term, through:

  • Role plays
  • Making a poster
  • Reading 'Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon'
