What a great week!

School building are not made to be empty. It has been great to have a full (and safe) school again. We heard students in the gym, art, library, and music room again. Our students are great at mask wearing. We all show the Lakeview expectations of Be Safe ~ Be Respectful ~ Be Engaged. It was a great week to be a Lakeview Lion!

Sign Up for February Conferences

Lakeview 5K-5th grade conferences are on the following dates and times:

Wednesday, February 24 from 3:30-7:30

Thursday, February 25 from 4:00-8:00

Conferences will be virtual on your teacher's Zoom and each conference slot will be 15 minutes long. If you arrive early, you will be in the teacher's Zoom waiting room until the time of the conference. SMVA students should see the information from your teachers for conferences, which may be on different dates. Lakeview 4K with Ms. Maes may also be at a different time.

Please be sure to choose your child's teacher from the Sign-up Genius list. Scroll across the tabs at the top. The first tab that opens is for Mrs. Zoellner's 5K class.

Click here for the link to the Sign-up Genius for conferences. We are going to try and schedule a conference for every single student because we value the chance to talk with you!

Please welcome

Ms. Nillissen, our School Social Worker, will be on leave for the next 5 weeks. In her place, please welcome Ms. Aguilar! Ms. Aguilar comes to Lakeview with many experiences and we are glad that she will be here to support students and families in so many ways. Please see this letter from Ms. Aguilar for more information. Welcome!

Daily attendance

We are back in session for full days, 5 days a week now. For 5K-5th that means 8:30-3:35.

I know how much each and every family is glad to have your children back at Lakeview full time. Please be aware that if your child misses a day of school, our district health team will look at every absence to determine if your child needs to be in COVID protocol. If it is cold outside (like it is right now), please do not call your child in sick unless they are actually ill. We need every student here as much as possible right now, and if the district is open, "cold," "snow," and "transportation" are not allowable excuses for not coming to school. We love having our students back!

Can you help?

We could use more antibacterial wipes at Lakeview. I know we were all scrambling for baby wipes a year ago, but if you have extra in your home now and could spare one or two, please send them to school where we will put them to good use!

Cousin's Sub Night for Lakeview

The kiddos have off of school on February 15th, treat yourselves to a night off from cooking too! Cousin's Subs in South Milwaukee is hosting a donation night for Lakeview Elementary. 15% of all sales from 4pm to 7pm will be donated back to the PTO! Thank you for your support.

New online tool for reading

Our students recently started using an online tool called Lexia to help support the development of literacy skills. Here are parent letters in English and Spanish. This week, students took an online placement test, and now Lexia will customize online skill builders combined with in-person instruction from teachers. If students are on quarantine or isolation and cannot attend school, Lexia will be part of their online learning while away.

Valentine's Day - this week!

We really do not like to make our students sad, especially on days of celebration. Here are some things you need to know:

• Do not send edible treats this year (no cupcakes, cookies, etc). They will not be passed out. I encourage you to instead consider purchasing a book or game for your child's classroom.

• If you choose to send anything for Valentine's Day, we will not consume any food in the classroom. For example, if you send prepackaged candy hearts, we will hand them out and they will be taken home. Do not send anything homemade and do not send anything store-bought that does not come individually pre-packaged.

• If you choose to send any cards or pre-packaged candy for Valentine's, please have your child bring it to school by Wednesday, February 10. Our teachers will quarantine all items for a day and hand them out at the end of school on Thursday, February 11 (since we do not have school on the 12th and Valentine's Day is a Sunday this year).

Speak Up, Speak Out

All school districts are required to have a way for students to report safety concerns beyond the traditional routes. In South Milwaukee, we are using the Speak Up, Speak Out system that was created by the State of Wisconsin's Department of Justice. All students have (or will have soon) a presentation by their teachers about school safety and how to report violence, safety, or bullying concerns. We encourage all students to develop trusting relationships at home and with school staff so they feel comfortable reporting issues like this, but if students ever find themselves unable to report to us, they have another place to go. Please see this family information about the Speak Up, Speak Out program. The link is on all student Chromebooks and on the Lakeview website. This is the link you can use anytime.

4K Calendar updated

For those families in 4K, please see this updated calendar for the remainder of the school year. This is also found on the district's website.

Save the Date - March 4

On Thursday, March 4, our school will host an online "Movement and Mindfulness Night" with a variety of activities for students and families to choose from! Please mark your calendar for this fun event for the entire family. It will be from 6:00-7:30 p.m. and feature some Lakeview staff members as well as people from outside of Lakeview. Stay tuned for more information.
