What's New in C2

Learning in C2
Math: We are wrapping up measurement, time, and money. We are moving into our final unit on data and graphing - focusing on tally charts, bar graphs, and pictographs. Have your child practice asking family members or friends in the neighborhood a survey question and tallying the data.
We would also like to encourage learners to continue practicing basic addition and subtraction facts on a daily basis. Your child's ability to instantly recall basic facts will support him or her as more complex operations are encountered in years to come!
Franklops - Seed Dispersal, Continents (social studies), and weathering/erosion.
Alexander - insects and plant growth needs
Davis - weathering and erosion, supply and demand (social studies)
Steindorff - growth needs of plants
Housley - growth needs of plants
Project Work Conversation Starters: Project time is winding down in C2 and our learners have learned so much from this process!
Alexander - insects and animals
Davis - restaurants and food
Franklops - Nature Trail, Beehives, Blood
Housley - insect habitats
Steindorff - pets
Use the following questions to learn more about your child's project work.
- What is the focus of your project?
- Why is your project important?
- What have you accomplished this week during project time?
- What has gone well this week during project time?
- What has not gone well this week during project time, and what are your ideas for improving it?
Encourage your child to search for answers to questions and to record them. Often times learners bring in things they've done at home and are able to help further the experience and project in class.

Mapping Our World
The Franklop Family has been working hard on learning, creating, and applying our learning of our Continents as well as the Equator, lines of longitude and latitude, and the Prime Meridian.
Going for the Gold... Which Continent will it be?!
Reflecting on our learning through Writing
It's so fun to read and hear your kids share their thoughts, ideas and questions as they reflect through writing.
Your children are AMAZING!!
Mapping Our World
Learners designed their own surveys and collected data from their peers.
The Brain Games
The 2016 Brain Games have officially begun! Teams will complete different math-related challenges and earn points for their efforts.
Our habitat is nearly complete! Please encourage your child to collect rocks, sticks, bricks, cans, and other items to fill our habitat.
The Brain Games
During Exploration Stations, Em and Gracie created a model of our insect habitat.
This week's Mystery Reader was Mrs. Housley's mom! She brought an extra clue (a collage of pictures) to help the kids know who she was, and she read Amelia Bedilia Bakes Off.
Our garden group's flowers are really showing growth.
Congratulations to Samuel! He will now compete in the winners' circle for addition.
Math Fact Friday
Today was our fifth Math Fact Friday! Please continue to practice basic addition and subtraction facts at home. A list of resources is posted on FreshGrade.
Congratulations to P.J.! He will now compete in the winners' circle for subtraction.

Graphing and Data
We have enjoyed collecting data from our friends and graphing the results.
Learners came up with a variety of questions to collect data from the class.
Pet Training Work Group
These learners have been working on training classes for pets: Obedience classes, potty training, and skill based tricks classes.
Check Out Work Group
We LOVE "buying" things from "Pet-O-Rama' for our pets.
Supplies Work Group
Food for all pets, bowls, collars, leashes.... all for sale!
Vet Work Group
Checking in and filling out paperwork at the vet.
Last Week Luau
Don't forget to mark your calendars! Monday, May 23, C2 will celebrate the end of our 2nd grade year with a Luau.
For the luau, we will have six stations, and each class will rotate through each station:
- Musical Beach Towels
- Beach Float Relay
- Coconut Over-Under Relay
- Beach Ball Parachute
If you can help by sending an item for these stations, please sign up using the link below. If the item is not consumable, write your name on it, and we will see that it is returned to you after our celebration.
We need a few parent volunteers to run the stations. These parents will set up a station at 9:00 and run it from 9:30 to 11:00 as each class rotates through. If you can help with this, please sign up using the link below. All the materials for the station will be provided. A Lead Learner will help you with the set-up and explain how to run the station. All you have to do is show up!
At 11:00, the entire community will participate in a fun relay, and we ask a parent volunteer from each class to help with this. If you are able to help with this, please sign up using the link below. Your Lead Learner will explain how you will help at the beginning of the relay at 11:00. (The details of the relay will remain a secret until that time. Volunteers' feet may get wet.)
The picnic will last from 11:30 to 12:15, and we invite all parents to attend! A form will come home soon for you to indicate whether your child will purchase a lunch from school or bring his or her lunch from home.
