The varsity baseball team competed throughout the duration of the season and worked to overcome some key injuries. Despite those injuries the Mariners were in the conference title hunt until the last week of the regular season and competed in the district tournament. By the end of the season four freshman and three sophomores saw regular time in the lineup, potentially putting the team in position to have a great 2020 season.
The junior varsity baseball team finished the season with an impressive 2nd place finish in the BWAC/MAC tournament and an overall record of 10-8-1. The team was led all year by sophomore captains Ian Blackstock and Anthony Rentzel, both of whom had great offensive seasons. Matt Terhune, Matt Simons, Carter Ames, and Riley Cass all logged very good innings on the mound for the Mariners, who improved steadily throughout the year. Great job boys!
The boys' track team was very competitive this season. Competing in the MAC Blue, they finished 3-2. The boys tied for 2nd at Regionals and finished 3rd at the Division meet. With 20 freshmen on the team, the future looks bright. Leading the way next year will be the juniors from this year that really excelled on the track. Three juniors qualified for states with Sal Tranchida becoming the Division 3 State Champion in high jump with a jump of 6'7", which was the best jump in the state that day in all divisions and set a new Marine City High School record.
The girls track team had a great season. All of the girls worked really hard this year, got along well and met many of their personal/running/throwing goals. There was really strong leadership, especially from senior captain, Sam Bieth. Their efforts paid off when two relay teams and three individual events qualified for the state finals in MHSAA division three. They even ended the season with an all state athlete when Elizabeth Coverdill had a 6th place finish in the 300 meter hurdles.
The girls soccer team had a great season with a final record of 15-4-2. They won the South Lake Tournament and also beat St. Clair to win back the Burns Trophy for the first time since 2012. The girls finished in second place in the MAC Gold. Addee Spencer, Emily Schoening, Hallie Hatcher, and Julia Haas made the All-Conference team. Hannah Ford, Jenna Waelens, Lauren Morris and Lydia Fowler all made the District team. Both Lauren Morris and Lydia Fowler were also recognized on the All-Regional team and received All-State Honorable Mention.
The boys golf team had a good 6-4 season despite very wet weather. The team was led by All- MAC Blue golfer, Jaden Heaslip, who carded scores as low as a 36 during league play. Jacob Kornago and Aubrey Comment were the low scoring Mariners at the regional tournament each shooting 88. Mason Beal was a consistent senior captain who will be greatly missed by the team next year.
Girls varsity tennis had a great season lead by McKenzie Cullimore, Abigail Dewitte, Isabelle Dewitte, Hannah Tomasek, Maddie Negro and Emily Wheeler. We had some new talent joining us this year and I look forward to Madel Humbert, Miranda Bieth, Jessica Wealens and Allyson Jackins returning stronger next year. The team finished 2nd in duel matches in the MAC Silver, unfortunately the divisional tournament was rained out. 3 players were named all conference, Abigail Dewitte, Isabelle, and McKenzie Cullimore. McKenzie was also the MAC Silver MVP.
The Mariner Trap Team grew in so many ways this year! We discovered ways to help each other out both in school as well as on the field. Every team member has an academic strength and weakness. For every weakness there is a team member strong in the same subject. It helps to hear from a peer on the team, that they find a class or assignment challenging as well. We work through it together so everybody can perform! On the field our Mariners all exceeded their personal best scores for the season and had a great time doing it! Our final competitions are coming up. We have nine Mariners competing at the state tournament in June and six Mariners moving on to compete during the National Tournament in July! The coaches are very proud of how much this team has accomplished during the 2019 season!
JV Baseball Tradition Continues
In what has become a bit of a Marine City JV Baseball tradition, MCHS is proud to show a few pictures of nine incredible Mariners that dedicated three hours to be “baseball buddies” for the Challenger League. These boys showed incredible character as they held hands and high fived kids that appreciated them more than they know.
Thank you, Coach Felax and the JV Baseball team for giving your time and making us proud to be a Mariner!MCHS Student-Athlete Recognized by State of Michigan
Ian Blackstock has been named the Most Positive Boys Swim & Dive Athlete in the State of Michigan!
Over 180 different schools have participated in the program in the first two years, with student-athletes nominated in every single high school sport. Ian was named one of the top 32 nominees by being named the winner in his sport’s category!
The winners will be recognized on the field at a Detroit Tigers game on Tuesday, June 25. In addition, winners will be considered for one of two $2,500 scholarships from Delta Air Lines that will be presented at the game as well!
INTERNATIONAL THESPIAN SOCIETY
In addition, five individuals were recognized for receiving "honor status", where additional points are awarded for continued involvement in theater. Logan McCulloch, Scout McCulloch, Morigan Vermilya, and Abigail Russelburg received Honor Thespian status, and Hannah Tomasek was recognized for reaching National Honor Thespian level for passing 1200 hours of various theater work. Both Abigail and Hannah were also recognized for their academic excellence. Congratulations to all our honor recipients and 2019 inductees.
