WLWV School Board Briefs
Nov. 6, 2018
The West Linn-Wilsonville School Board held a regular meeting on Nov. 5. The following are select highlights from that meeting.
Board Reports on School Work Plan Visits, West Linn-Wilsonville Student Learning
Every fall, West Linn-Wilsonville School Board members meet with principals to learn about WLWV schools and the important work taking place in the classroom. Principals share detailed work plans for the school year, highlighting specific areas where building leaders and classroom teachers are striving to make positive growth for all West Linn-Wilsonville students.
While principals have traditionally shared detailed reports during School Board meetings, the WLWV Board of Directors unanimously decided to bring this important learning to the school level, embarking on learning walks during the months of October and November. The WLWV School Board selected 3-4 WLWV schools each, engaging in in-depth learning during the school day. Board members spent time observing and learning alongside building principals and district administrators, examining classroom learning and discerning the student experience first-hand.
Board members shared their impressions during the Nov. 5 meeting. Board Chair Ginger Fitch shared key takeaways from her visits to West Linn High School, Cedaroak Park Primary, and Meridian Creek Middle School. Vice Chair Dylan Hydes, meanwhile, visited Arts and Technology High School, Boones Ferry Primary, and Stafford Primary, while Director Regan Molatore visited Rosemont Ridge Middle School, Boeckman Creek Primary, Lowrie Primary, Bolton Primary, and Three Rivers Charter School. Director Chelsea Martin visited Wood Middle School, Sunset Primary, and Willamette Primary, and Director Betty Reynolds has visited Trillium Creek Primary with plans to meet with Athey Creek Middle School and Wilsonville High School in the coming weeks.
Board members discussed the themes and trends they witnessed during visits, including cycles of inquiry, learning targets, equity, and cultures of inclusion. Board members noted the high-leverage instructional practices taking place in the classroom, and the interest in teacher Professional Learning Communities and the benefits of professional development that is taking place.
Assistant Superintendent of Primary Schools, Dr. David Pryor, shared feedback from building principals. He said school leaders unanimously agreed it was a positive experience, and a practice they hoped board members would regularly engage in going forward.
District Plans Future High School Possibilities Community Forums
Combined with recent 10-year enrollment projections, and learning space capacity calculations created by the Long Range Planning Committee, the Board has signaled that it's time to begin planning for future high school learning spaces. Two Community Forums will be held, inviting community members to learn about possibilities for future high school learning spaces and provide input.
Both Community Forums are exactly the same. Patrons may attend whichever forum is more convenient. Boundary adjustments will NOT be a topic at these forums, as future high school possibilities are not expected to impact existing boundaries.
Dec. 4 — The district will hold the first Future High School Possibilities Community Forum on Dec. 4 starting at 6 p.m. in the Rosemont Ridge Middle School commons.
Dec. 5 — The district will hold the second Future High School Possibilities Community Forums on Dec. 5 starting at 6 p.m. in the Meridian Creek Middle School commons.
Board Receives Updated School Capacities
In recognition of recent changes across district schools, including a new Sunset Primary and Meridian Creek Middle School, the Long Range Planning Committee recently recalculated learning space capacities across all 16 WLWV schools.
The Board received the Learning Space Capacity report on Nov. 5, including projected available capacity over the course of 10 years using recent demographics projections from FLO Analytics. Learning Space Capacities will be pivotal as the Board continues to contemplate Board Goal No. 4.
