Smarter Balanced Tests coming up
Last spring, students in grades 3 – 8 and 11 in the Beaverton School District and throughout Oregon took the state tests (Smarter Balanced) in English Language Arts and Mathematics and Science for 5th & 8th graders.
In addition to content standards, these assessments are designed to measure critical thinking, problem solving and communication skills. The test results provide you, our schools, our district and the state with information about how well we are preparing our students for their next steps including college and career readiness.
Our students will take these tests once between January and June 2019.House Bill 2655 permits parents and adult students to annually opt-out of Oregon’s statewide summative tests in English Language Arts and Math by submitting a form to the school the student attends. The school shall provide any student who is exempted from a state test with supervised study time while other students are testing.

Importance of Cold Flu Season Preparation & Prevention
Cold and flu season has already begun, but there are things you can do to keep yourself and your children healthier. Prevention measures include washing your hands frequently, getting lots of rest, drinking plenty of fluids, and avoiding touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
Home is the best place for a child who is ill. Please review the Washington County letter on the Flu, Norovirus and Whooping Cough for symptoms and prevention information. The Too Sick for School informational flyer has guidelines to help you make the decision about when to keep your child home from school.
Beaverton School-Based Health Center
The Beaverton School-Based Health Center, located on the campus of Beaverton High School, 13000 SW 2nd Street, with hours Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Are your immunizations up-to-date? There is an immunization exclusion date on Feb. 20th. The Beaverton SBHC has a licensed Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant on staff. The medical provider can conduct routine exams, diagnose and treat acute and chronic illnesses, as well as prescribe any needed medication and perform immunizations. Additional services include mental health and dental.
Patients and their families are encouraged to call ahead for appointment times and any questions they may have about services.
Erin's Law
In July of 2015, the Oregon Legislature passed SB 856 (Sex Abuse Prevention Instruction) which requires schools to provide child sexual abuse prevention instruction kindergarten through grade 12. Each year, every student will be required to receive at least four lessons on sexual abuse prevention. At Vose Elementary, we will be delivering these lessons in February - April. Our first lessons will be delivered by mid-February.
Erin’s Law also requires a professional training component for administrators, teachers, and other school personnel regarding communicating these topics to students, and a parental involvement component to inform parents about the characteristics of sexual predators and provide instruction on how to discuss these topics with their children. There are several resources to support parents as they also partner with us to provide a series of safe, inclusive, thoughtful lessons. Erin’s Law Website:http://www.erinslaw.org/erins-law/, Resources and Guidance for Parents:http://www.erinslaw.org/for-parents/, and the Oregon Department of Education Parent Tip Sheet:https://www.oregon.gov/ode/students-and-family/healthsafety/Documents/parenttipsheet.pdf.
As with any curricular area, parents may choose to opt their child out of these lessons. The same documentation and procedure that will be used to opt of a Health unit can be used for these lessons as well. Please notify us by February 8th if you choose to opt your child out of these lessons by completing the linked form and returning it to Vose Elementary Main Office. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rDeZrVqv7Fgd19tGcFB4LQfjwdaPpMetZPWTHsOkz10/edit?usp=sharing
Teachers becoming the students- Collaborating on Wednesday afternoons
This month teachers worked on learning and practicing strategies to increase math dialogue, problem-solving and skills for their mathematicians. Check out some of their math work below. Having time for professional development is so powerful in perfecting their craft and improving math instruction for our student learners.

Attendance Matters
Regular attendance will help children do well in elementary school, secondary school, college and at work. According to the Attendance Works Organization, by 6th grade, absenteeism is one of three signs that a student may drop out of school. By 9th grade, regular and high attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than 8th grade test scores.
Attendance habits are set early, so please start building good attendance habits with your children at a young age. As a parent, you can help by establishing a regular bedtime and morning routines. You can also avoid medical appointments during school hours, as well as extended trips when school is in session. We will be sharing more helpful tips and information throughout the school year. Here is a link to additional resources and information around attendance.
