Meet Ms. Thompson!

Miss Thompson is our student teacher this year and is starting to take over a lot of the instruction during the day. She wanted to share a little bit about herself as an introduction.

Hi! My name is Shelby Thompson and I am a student teacher in Mrs. Hojer's 5th grade classroom this year. I live in Howard SD and am attending school at Dakota State University for Elementary Education. So far this year I have really enjoyed getting to know your kids and can't wait to continue to do so! This year I have been given the opportunity to not only teach students, but to learn from them as well. As the year progresses I hope I am given the chance to learn more about you as well!

Art Project

We are in need of some soup/tin cans for an Art project next week. (Preferably the 10-15oz size, but any size will work). If you have any that you use over the weekend, please wash them and remove the labels and send with your child to school! The more the merrier! Thank you!

Reading

We have completed 1/3 of the book, Refugee. The students are really excited about this book and are very intrigued. I love that it takes place in three different times in history, which allows us to really think about how life was different during those times. The students have worked hard on assignments for the novel. We will take part in a Google Hangout (similar to Skype/Facetime) with a class from Texas next week where we will discuss the story so far and share some of our favorite parts of the book! We wrote/decorated postcards today to send to the Texas class. I hope that your child is talking about this book at home. If not, ask him/her to tell you about it! It is a fabulous book!

Math

We are continuing to work on finding the volumes of rectangular prisms in Math. Today, the students worked on finding the volume, where they had to split an object and add the volumes together. I would challenge the students to find the volume of objects (rectangular prisms) at home, or even to find the volume of their bedrooms!

Fall/Halloween Party

I just want to thank everyone that volunteered to help with parties this year, and to be helpers in the classroom as needed! Mrs. Poppen sent out an email with a link to sign up for the party on October 31st. Thank you to those that have already volunteered.

If you are interested in helping out during our party, we still need a host or two for the party and someone to help plan a fun game/activity! You can find the link below. If you need help signing up, let me know!

PTO Fundraiser: Wreaths/Greens

The LIW PTO is selling wreaths/greens as a fundraiser. You can find more information via their Facebook Page (linked below).

Congrats on a great season, Bulldogs!
