Dr. Hector P. Garcia Middle School ~ Northside ISD

January 15-19, 2018

Students will be registering for 2018-2019 course selections in February. All courses are available for review in the middle school course catalog: https://goo.gl/35yg9y. It is a good idea to browse the catalog with your child to begin planning their choices. Counselors will be meeting with each grade level to review the process in detail. A course selection worksheet will be sent home for parents and students to complete together.

More registration information can be found on the Garcia webpage: https://nisd.net/garcia/

January 19th marks the end of the grading period. Please check the Home Access Center to ensure your child has turned in all their assignments.

It's a GREAT day to be a Gladiator!

Is Your Child Interested In Attending A Magnet School For High School?

Eighth graders and eligible students are invited to attend the 2018 Magnet School Fair from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday Jan. 16 at the Northside Sports Gym, 8400 N. Loop 1604 W., in the Farris Athletic Complex.

Applications are being accepted for the 2018-19 school year for all five NISD magnet programs, which include Business Careers, Communications Arts, and Health Careers high schools, Construction Careers Academy, and the John Jay Science and Engineering Academy.

Northside magnet schools offer a focused, career-specific education for students who show an interest in a particular field or know what career path they want to take. Today, about 3,000 students are enrolled in NISD magnet programs.

All Northside eighth graders are eligible for enrollment. Health Careers High School is the only magnet school to accept students who live outside the District. Some schools accept applications from students already in high school. Please check with individual programs for application and age requirements. Enrollment is limited at each school.

The deadline for applications is Feb. 9, 2018.

At the Magnet School Fair, representatives will be available to provide details about the program and information on the application process. Representatives from the O’Connor HS agriculture program will also attend the Fair.

In addition, representatives of the magnet schools will be giving presentations and handing out applications at Garcia on January 24.

Students may see Mrs. Minnis in the counseling office for more information.

A Lady of Literature: An Interview with Ms. Tharp

Needless to say, Ms. Stacie Tharp loves book. What librarian doesn’t? She has read at least five hundred books and says her favorite book changes all the time. Her current favorite is Refugee by Alan Gratz. She enjoys the genres of historical fiction, realistic fiction, and science fiction. Of course there is much more to do in the library than read.

Ms. Tharp stays busy updating the library’s websites, helping with 3D printing, working with students on computers, purchasing books and furniture for the library, giving book talks to students and parents, and teaching lessons about databases and research tools.

Ms. Tharp has been teaching for twenty-two years, and has worked at many different schools. She says, “Dr. Hector Garcia Middle School has the most kind and caring students and staff by far!” That kindness inspires her. “Having a kind, caring attitude,” Ms. Tharp says, “helps you block out all the negative things that exist in the world. My goal is to do at least three kind things for people each day. Doing that has made me a happier person.” Ms. Tharp believes that a student’s character is very important. “Who you are now, is who you are going to be when you grow up. Remember to treat people with kindness, and you will be more likely to be successful in the future.”

The students and staff of Garcia Middle School would like to thank Ms. Tharp for all that she does and congratulate her on her engagement.
