Poplar Grove Post
March 2017
NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL:
Greetings,
This school year feels as though it has passed in the blink of an eye. March 15 marks the final day of the 3rd quarter grading period and the first day of Spring will soon follow. I am amazed at the complex information students are learning as well as the engaging and purposeful lessons used to enhance student learning. I am encouraged to see our students take on and complete challenging tasks. PGMS is truly a school where educating the whole child is a priority. Earlier this semester I was astounded by our student artwork displayed for all to see at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts. During my daily visits to classrooms I see students progressing in their ability to play musical instruments as well as developing their vocal skills in choir. Whether a student is an aspiring author, mathematician, scientist, historian, musician, athlete, or artist, PGMS has something for everyone.

CLINIC NEWS FROM NURSE LIZ:
FEVER MYTHS AND FACTS
Your child has a temperature of 101.4 taken in their ear. They have no other symptoms of illness or complaints of pain. He or she is eating and drinking well and behaving normally.
In this scenario, would you give your child fever reducing medication?
Fever is a common cause of parental concern. Parents feel that they must administer fever reducing medications ( Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen), worried that a fever will harm their child. A fever is actually good and beneficial in sick children. A fever turns on your child’s immune system, which helps their body fight off infection. How your child looks and acts is more important than the reading on the thermometer. Remember, the goal in treating a fever with fever reducing medication should be to make your child more comfortable, rather than being concerned about returning to normal body temperature.
SPRING AND FALL SPORTS TRYOUTS
Tryouts for both spring and fall sports are rapidly approaching. Any student that wishes to participate in middle school sports, must have a current physical on file BEFORE tryouts!
COUNSELOR'S CORNER:
Helping teenagers feel good about themselves
Middle school students who feel good about themselves have an advantage during the tween years. They’re less dependent on impressing others, and they tend to face challenges with confidence. Here are some ways to build self-esteem in your child.
1. Be realistic.
2. If a youngster is like many middle graders, her view of herself (outgoing or shy, artsy or athletic) is based on where she fits in among her peers. But instead of comparing herself to others, urge her to recognize her strengths and pursue them.
3. Choose friends wisely. Encourage your child to spend time with people who build her up and avoid those who put her down or talk behind her back.
4. Help Others:. Making a difference in another person’s life can boost your middle grader’s self confidence. She will take pride in being a leader and a role model. Suggest that she tutor younger students or volunteer with children’s programs at a community center or place of worship.

GRADE LEVEL NEWS:
5TH GRADE NEWS:
We have had so much learning going on in 5th grade this quarter, and we still have loads ahead of us! While students are digging into fractions in math class, they have become experts on space in Science and Language Arts! With the arrival of our new chromebooks, students launched on a research journey to the far reaches of outer space in their Language Arts classes to learn more about the planets and other celestial bodies they had explored in Science. Each student selected a topic related to space and conducted research from at least 3 different sources to find information for their five-paragraph informative essays. We have some curious scientists in 5th grade who learned a lot about our solar system and topics beyond!
As we look ahead to March, students are learning about the Roaring 20’s in Social Studies. Ms. Omer is allowing students to invest in companies as they play their hand in the stock market. Students will see how markets rise and fall over the next few weeks in a market simulation in class, leading up to the Great Crash that ultimately resulted in the Great Depression. It is so exciting to see how engaged our students are in these interesting topics!
6TH GRADE NEWS:
We celebrate Pi Day on March 14. Our schedule will be adjusted with activities scattered throughout the day. First period, we have Algebra students supervising stations. During FOCUS, all FOCUS teachers will supervise additional stations for more learning about Pi. Finally, we will eat pie during recess. We'll be hoping for a sunny Pi day!
7TH GRADE NEWS:
Field Trip!!!!! Seventh grade students enjoyed going to Nashville Children's Theater recently to see the play Treasure Island. After enjoying this great production, everyone enjoyed their lunch at the Spaghetti Factory. You can tell by the looks on students faces, they enjoyed this day of learning and relaxing with friends.
This week students enjoyed a wonderful ice cream feast to celebrate Valentine's Day! Thanks so much to all of the parents who made this fun time possible for our students!
8TH GRADE NEWS:
Students are continuing to work on their argument of policy research paper. They have been conducting surveys of the students, faculty, and parents, as well as interviewing staff and administration. They are in the process of analyzing the data to develop their recommendation on the policy. The four policies are gum chewing, dress code, assigned seat in the cafeteria, and personal electronic device policy.
8th grade students have been visiting high schools for orientation and are preparing to register for classes next year.
