From the Principal

Dear Parents and Carers

Well done to our Year 6 students on a wonderful last assembly. They were very creative and performed beautifully. I have to say it is very pleasing to see how confidently they spoke and enjoyed their performance. I am sure that there are some budding performers in the making. It is not always easy to prepare the last Year 6 assembly and produce such a high quality performance and Mr Popadynec is to be thanked for coordinating.

Our Year 5 students will hold their speeches and elections this coming Monday for the 2020 Year 6 Student Leadership roles. I would like to thank Mrs Bettell for preparing the students in preparation for the elections. Our Year 5 students are also going on their overnight camp to the Zoo next week. I know that it will be a wonderful experience for them.

Congratulations to our Year 3 students who made their First Reconciliation last Saturday. Thank you to Miss Bechelli and Mrs Poole for coordinating this important sacrament for the candidates.

Thank you to Mr John McGrath, MLA, for visiting our school recently for the judging of this years Art Exhibition. The Art Exhibition awards will be presented at the assembly on 6 December 2019.

Following is information re Incorporation of Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA).

Catholic Education WA and Catholic schools in Western Australia have been responsive to the educational needs of children and young people, as well as the changing world in which we operate, for over 100 years. Today, Catholic education is a robust, adaptable and dynamic system of 162 schools and learning centres. The dedication of teachers and school staff has been vital in fostering continuous development and improvement of Catholic schools in Western Australia.

With around 76,000 students and 13,000 staff in our care, it is essential that necessary steps are taken to review and secure our system's sustainability. Over recent years, the Bishops of Western Australia have thoroughly appraised the system's governance and have made the decision to incorporate Catholic education in our state.

The move to a contemporary governance structure, promoting greater clarity and transparency, has been informed by the unanimous recommendation to the Bishops from an independent advisory committee, as well as consultation with Catholic education systems in other Dioceses across Australia. A comprehensive review into the legal and financial implications of incorporation has also been undertaken with the support of external specialists and extensive planning has gone into determining the process and implications of incorporation.

This incorporation will see the existing governance structure transitioned to a public company, of which the four diocesan Bishops are shareholders, who in turn appoint a Board of Commissioners to provide strategic governance of the system. The new company will be known as Catholic Education Western Australia Limited. Importantly, this change will strengthen our legal, risk and financial compliance frameworks.

Central to the decision making process was the need to ensure that any change in governance would have minimal impact on the employment conditions of staff, and would positively contribute to the sustainability and effectiveness of Catholic schools in the future.

This decision reaffirms the initial establishment of our Commission in 1971 to determine the best way of providing governance support to Catholic schools and will enable CEWA to continue to provide outstanding, engaging and safe learning environments for young Western Australians.

God bless.

Allen McMahon

Waste Free Wednesday!

What a wonderful response to our very first Waste Free Wednesday! Parents, you have risen to the challenge and championed our cause . . . to reduce waste! The results are lots of great looking, package-free lunchboxes AND the one bin we put out was only 1/3 full. (Usually we would have two whole bins of waste!)

Our compost tumblers are looking really healthy and we are almost ready to build up the garden beds we have laid out for growing veggies next year.

Once again, high fives all around to you for making the change.

Choir Pizza Night

A huge thank you to all involved in helping with our choir pizza night, with afternoon tea, dropping off pizzas and general supervision. We had fun getting our Christmas music started. The children really enjoyed themselves singing, playing games and watching the movie Paddington 2.

St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal

Christmas is fast approaching and the St Vincent de Paul Society has invited us to participate in their annual appeal to make a difference to someone's life this Christmas. Every class has a special tub to fill with non-perishable food items to help families facing challenging times over the festive period. Please ensure that all donated items are not due to expire for another 6 months.

We thank you for your kind support of this worthy cause.

The baskets will be presented to a representative from St Vincent de Paul at our assembly next Friday 29 November 2019.

Artist of the Week

Emily from Year 1 is the Artist of the Week. She was chosen because of her beautiful sun and moon art. Emily's favourite thing about her artwork is that it is colourful. Emily loves Art because she thinks it’s fun. Her favourite art medium is painting.

Musician of the Week

On the 10 November, Zoelene in Year 6 passed (with fantastic results) her Gold Level Piano Practical and Theory exam. This took place at the Forte Music School in Canning Vale. Part of the exam was for Zoelene to play three songs. She played the songs "Marche Slav", "Kingfisher Falls" and "Gavotte". Aside from the theory, she was also tested on her aural and rhythm skills. This type of exam will test what she has learned and whether she is ready to move up a level in piano. A challenge that Zoelene has prepared for since Term 1 with the help of her piano teacher, Ms Priest. This will also prepare her for AMEB (Australian Music Examinations Board) next year. In her spare time Zoelene is learning to play “The Avengers Theme”, "Seven Years” and “Titanium”. Zoelene certainly enjoys playing the piano and will continue playing in the future.

Keep up the good work Zoelene!

Buy your bamboo toothbrush!

On sale outside the school library. Support Year 6 and be part of the change!

Nearly every single toothbrush made since the 1930s is still out there in the world somewhere, living on as a piece of trash. Recycle your plastic toothbrush, make the world a little greener, and get your own non-toxic, bamboo toothbrush which returns back to the Earth to breakdown.

DOSC's - Dads T20 Cricket Game

Our inaugural Dad’s of St Columba’s T20 cricket game was a hit with dad’s, children and families. We played a format of 4 overs per batting pair, with a super over and wickets were -5 off your score total. Some stylish batting was observed that Justin Langer and the Australian selectors would have been proud of! It was a great Sunday afternoon with many of the players children and families watching the spectacle from the sidelines. Thank you to Owen McColl for support with the cricket equipment through his online cricketing business ‘Ulysses’. We would love more Dad’s of St Columba’s to join us for another fun afternoon when we play again in 2020.
