Ripon Cathedral School Update
Week ending Friday 12th January 2018
Happy New Year to everyone
I hope you all had fun and some quality family time over the Christmas and New Year break. The children all seem to have come back to school in a positive frame of mind and raring to go, just like the staff. If you are new to our school family then I wish you a very warm welcome, in particular to Mrs Rasbeary our new Year 4 class teacher. There are many exciting projects planned this term, all culminating in a spring term exhibition - more about that in later updates.
Last Friday all of the staff were involved in training on 'oracy', one of our key priorities, there will be more information on this over the coming weeks so watch this space.
It is the Epiphany season and this week we have been looking at the story of the three wise men bringing presents to the baby Jesus. In addition the children have been chalking their doors (see below for an explanation).
In the meantime I would like to thank you in advance for the support you will be giving your children and the school this coming year.
Wishing you every blessing for 2018.

what is the best way to travel?
This term Year 2 are answering the question, 'What is the best way to travel?' This week they had a visit from a motorbike.
If you have a method of transport which is interesting or different, which you think would engage the children, then please contact Miss Hardy or the school office.

chalking the door
This week our classes have all 'chalked' their doors with a special message.
If you don’t know what the chalk is all about, you are certainly not alone.
Epiphany marks the occasion of a time-honoured Christian tradition of “chalking the doors.” The formula for the ritual — adapted for 2018 — is simple: take chalk of any color and write the following above the entrance of your home: 20 + C + M + B + 18.
The letters have two meanings. First, they represent the initials of the three wise men Casper, Melchior, and Balthazar — who came to visit Jesus in His first home. They also abbreviate the Latin phrase, Christus mansionem benedicat: “May Christ bless the house.” The “+” signs represent the cross, and the “20” at the beginning and the “18” at the end mark the year. Taken together, it is asking God to bless the house.
The chalking of the doors is a centuries-old practice throughout the world, and an easy tradition for you to try at home.

Oscar's Winter Wonderland
All the staff were rather envious of Oscar's holiday club when they came in for training on the last Friday of the Christmas break! The children were having a super time in their pyjamas and onesies including playing games and watching a film with popcorn. Oscar's is now back into its usual routine of breakfast club starting at 8am and after school care ending at 5.45pm.
