Falco Newsletter Sept. 8 - Sept. 17
2021-22 Newsletter for Five Oaks Middle School
A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Hello Falcon Families!
It was so nice to see so many of you at Back to School Night! If you were unable to attend, or didn’t get a chance to see the videos, they are on our social media and websites to view when you have a chance. As we approach the first day of the new school year, we want to make sure that we are partnering to keep students and staff safe and healthy! A few important things to remember:
Masks are required except for eating and drinking. Gators and shields are not a replacement for facemasks. We will give students a disposable mask if they forget their mask. This includes inside and outside, as well as on the bus.
Distancing requirements can be confusing! In classrooms students must remain 3 feet apart. This is because the transmission in classrooms is low, especially when other mitigating factors are present (including universal masking, upgraded HVAC systems, and hand sanitizing) especially in classrooms where exertion is not required. Everywhere else the distancing requirement is 6 feet, this includes hallways, lunch time, recess, and during any breaks.
We are highly encouraging water bottle use and will have a reusable cup with lid and straw for all students on day 1. Drinking fountain use will be prohibited so students will need to use a reusable bottle or the provided cup.
Lockers will not be used at the beginning of the school year. Due to distancing requirements and logistics, it is not feasible to use lockers at this time. We will reassess as the year progresses.
PE classes will be held outside (with masks) to help reduce the threat of the spread of Covid.
Choir and Band classes will be held indoors unless students are performing (singing or playing instruments) which will then require those classes to be held outside.
Every student in BSD is able to access free breakfast and lunch at school. We have created systems to ensure students are six feet apart when eating to limite close contact and spread. A reminder to students: sharing of food is not allowable at this time
During school hours our hallways are directional. We will teach students and practice over and over to ensure we’re all on the same page.
Car drop off and pick up is in the designated area in the front of the building (please see our safe routes to school map on the BSD website). Doors open at 9:00 am for student arrival. Dismissal is at 3:50. Our special program busses drop off at the same area. Please proceed slowly and carefully for student safety.
The back of the building is for bus drop off (general education). It is unsafe to drop students off via parent car in this area.
We appreciate your partnership in helping us reinforce these expectations with students.
I wanted to address a few questions that came up at BTSN.
The daily schedule is posted on the Five Oaks website.
A/B days
The common middle school experience was adopted last year as the schedule all comprehensive middle schools in Beaverton would follow. This schedule is designed to allow students more time in Math and Science.
While the schedule says we have an 8 period day, students actually have a period between their Math and Science classes that will rotate between the two subjects on A and B days.
For instance: if your students schedule says AB next to one line of Math and has an A on another math line, that means on A days they will have a double period of math and one period of Science. On B days they will have one period of Math and a double period of Science.
We will go over this in detail with students and walk them through it over and over for as long as is needed to get into a routine.
A/B days do not impact any other subject outside of Math and Science.
We will be updating our virtual BTSN to include updated videos. Our release date is tentatively scheduled for 9/21.
The first 8 days of school will be advisory days. Advisory is our homeroom. Students will have activities every day to help orient themselves to the facility, learn all of the protocols, build community, and participate in SEL (social emotional learning lessons). Starting the week of 9/20, Advisory will happen every Tuesday and Wednesday in the morning.
We cannot allow volunteers and visitors in the building at this time. We are hopeful that Covid guidance will change as numbers decrease and we will be able to have volunteers and visitors again soon!
The school supply list is on the website. We try to update it in June so that it’s available all summer. It was posted June 21. If you go to the Five Oaks website it’s under the about tab.
We will be having clubs this year! They don’t usually start until October so stay tuned for more information.
The following expectations are in the handbook on the website, but here is a list of the most often asked about items:
We have an off and away policy regarding personal electronics. That means student cell phones need to be turned off once school starts and put in backpacks.
Backpacks are allowed in classrooms, especially since we can’t use lockers this year.
Protocols for leaving the classroom to use the restroom, go to the office, etc., will be covered on the first day of school.
Students need to bring their chromebooks every day - it’s a good idea to charge them the night before!
Food of any kind is not allowed in classrooms. If your child needs to snack outside of lunch or breakfast time, please let us know so we can create a plan to make that happen. We want to ensure we’re supporting their needs while we’re keeping our school clean and mice free!
Gum is not permitted in classrooms and highly discouraged at lunch times.
Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns kelly_laverne@beaverton.k12.or.us
Días A / B

Communication about Grading and Reporting
The Beaverton School District believes that learning is an ongoing process in which all students learn in different ways and at different rates. However, the (F) mark has communicated a conflicting message — that the time for learning is finite and that the rate of learning is confined to an academic semester. Moving forward, BSD will improve the clarity of communication around academic progress on a scale that no longer includes the F-mark. Instead, when students have not yet demonstrated proficiency, a mark of Incomplete (I) or No Grade (N) will be reported. Students will then be given extra support to meet learning targets.
We believe that this change is a significant step in our move to meet the needs of all students. We know the move will not be without challenges, but we’re excited about the improvements to our system and the increased student achievement that will happen as a result.
Questions? Please let me know.
Thank you,

SUICIDE PREVENTION
