Lunar New Year Celebration
On Wednesday January 25th the Horace Porter School community participated in a P.B.I.S school wide celebration of the Chinese Lunar New Year. Students had the opportunity to explore Chinese culture by learning new games, exploring new foods, learning how to handle chopsticks, ink painting, and the tradition of the red envelopes on the Lunar New Year.
Po Fong, the owner of a restaurant named Po's Rice & Spice in East Hampton, came to HW Porter School to share information about Chinese New Year. Almost 60 students were able to participate in making Tang Yuan (sweet rice balls), a traditional food eaten during Chinese New Year.
Villari's Martial Arts of Mansfied gave each grade a presentation about the race between the 12 zodiac animals, positive character traits for each animal, and some ideas for how to demonstrate strong character in the Year of the Rabbit.
The P.B.I.S team looks forward to future events that allow our school family to practice positive behaviors outside of the regular academic day while developing an understanding and respect for the variety of cultures that make up our world community.

Square One ART PTO Fundraiser
Here is an update about Square One ART, the PTO art fundraiser.
Porter Elementary and Middle School Parents:
Due to a change in scheduling this year, not every student has had opportunity to design and create a Square One Art piece for custom keepsakes.
Mrs. Shive has three classes who will receive blank cardstock upon which they can do their art and return to school with their teacher. Mrs. Hall, Mrs. Bacon, and Mrs. Dousis will be sending home the cardstock paper with their students. For all MIDDLE SCHOOL students who did not create a Square One Art piece, they can pick up cardstock at the front desk with Mrs. White. Your child must be done with their artwork AND it must be dropped off at school by Wednesday, February 22.
Be sure to fill out your child's teacher's name and all information is clearly written.
The various keepsake items can be ordered when packets arrive around March 15th. See www.square1art.com for ideas and details about what your child can draw and what you can order!
Weekly Middle School Band Awards
The middle school band has recently started a new incentive to recognize the great things students are doing in the classroom.
Each week, Ms. Stolarun will be recognizing students that demonstrate the following criteria in band:
- Showing kindness
- Being helpful
- Going above and beyond
Students who are selected will earn a certificate, have their photo taken and will be able to use our “golden music stand” as a reward during the next band class. Students who earn the reward will also be able to come to the music room on a day of their choosing during lunch time with a friend. Each week new students will be recognized.
Congratulations to our three recipients this week Marisa Groves (6th)
and Jory Mills (6th) - Great job!
