Classroom Connections
In Humanities, scholars began learning about the landforms and bodies of water of Texas. Scholars will continue to learn about other geographical features that make Texas a unique state. In reading, we have been working on increasing our reading stamina and how to make connections about the text we read. Scholars have been very engaged in participating in our book challenge and we are about to begin our first read aloud, Wonder. With the help of Mrs. Vorachard, scholars will experience the book in English and Spanish. In the area of writing, scholars are getting ready to write their beginning of the year writing sample this coming week. Once we finish, we will be conferencing on our narratives and establishing classroom goals. Can't wait to read their writing pieces in both English and Spanish.

This year our scholars will be encouraged to participate in the GCISD Book Challenge throughout the school year as part of their reading class. Last year we had 100% of our scholars complete the challenge and we can't wait to do it again this year! The goal of the challenge is to help our scholars learn to love reading! Here are some key points about the challenge:
- Scholars have to read 25 books or more.
- In order to count as one book, the page count must be a minimum of 100 pages. Books over 300 pages may count as two books and so on.
- Scholars will keep a digital log in Google Docs (we will set this up this week) and be given class time each week to make necessary changes.
- Any reading that scholars did this summer CAN count towards this year's challenge!
- Parent's are also encouraged to join in the challenge, so let's do this!

Homework
Homework Reminder
Scholars have math, reading, and cursive homework on Monday - Thursday.
Math homework is designed to take 20-30 minutes each night. You can help develop their skills by having your child explain their thinking, creating a set time to sit down and review their work, and by reinforcing the importance of developing foundational work/study habits. In addition to their nightly homework students should also complete 10-15 minutes of fluency practice and record it on their daily fluency log.
For reading homework, scholars should read 20 minutes every night and record it in their reading log. This will not only improve their reading skills, but will definitely make them stronger writers. Scholars will also have cursive homework. This will allow our scholars to meet their established goal of being able to write their first and last name in cursive on all assignments.
