Saying Hello... and Goodbye
This Thursday, Gayman Elementary School will be saying goodbye to a valuable, and beloved member of our community, Mrs. Mary Neary. Mrs. Neary, our school nurse, will be taking a new job in the corporate world. We wish her the best of luck!
And welcome to our newest staff members...
Ms. Amy Hoch is our newest educational assistant in a special education classroom. She comes to us from Warwick Elementary School.
Mrs. Hanna Fili is our new speech and language pathologist. She will be joining the Gayman community until Mrs. Narzisi returns in January.
And... Ms. Emma Duncan, our building substitute, who will be supporting our students in their classrooms and in the Innovation Lab.

Gayman Musical: Willy Wonka, Jr.
If your 5th or 6th grader is interested in participating in the musical as an actor or actress, helping with costumes, or working backstage, we invite parents to attend one of two meetings which will provide information about how the musical will be operating this year. At the meeting, we will be discussing the audition process, roles and levels of involvement for students, the practice schedule, student responsibility, and volunteer opportunities for parents. Parents only need to attend one of the the following meetings: October 2, at 6:30 and October 3, at 3:30.
Click Here to Sign Up. If you cannot attend, please use the link to let us know your interest.
CB Cares: Boomerang Award
Developmental Assets are concrete, positive, common sense experiences and qualities that provide understanding of what young people need to succeed and be healthy. October’s Asset is #22 School Engagement – A young person that is actively engaged in learning. Students can be nominated by students, parents, and teachers. Please send your nominations by October 24 to Miss Meier in the office, or email at emeier@cbsd.org. Thank you!

Box Top Collection
It is time for the first Box Top collection! Please send in with your child neatly trimmed Box Tops. There is a collection envelope in every classroom. The Box Tops will be collected on October 5th. As a reminder Box Tops do expire, so please send them in throughout the year.
Saving the Earth... One Crayon at a Time!
More than a half-million pounds of crayons are discarded every year, turning into a waxy sludge that clogs our landfills and never biodegrades. Knowing this, on the last days of school in the 2017-18 School Year, Gayman students and teachers along with Gayman’s Earth-Loving Committee, collected their left-over and unwanted crayon bits and dropped them off at A.C. Moore. The crayons were then shipped to the Crayon Initiative (https://thecrayoninitiative.org).
Gayman saved 16 pounds of crayons from the landfills! Better yet, our old crayons were melted down, remanufactured and distributed to art programs at children’s hospitals across the U.S., brightening the lives of young patients during their stay.
Way to go Gayman!
Crayola ColorCycle Program
This is Isak Elmarsson, from Mr. Grace's 4th grade classroom.
Again, this year, I’m helping Gayman Elementary participate in the Crayola ColorCycle program where we collect and repurpose used markers. I will be accepting all brands of used markers, dry erase markers, and highlighters. Last year was a great success and we collected over 650 markers. This year I’m hoping we’ll be able to break our goal of 1,000 markers!
There will be a box in each hallway labeled “ColorCycle: Drop off unusable markers, dry erase markers, and highlighters here!” Just drop off markers at any time! Every single marker counts! If you would like more information, please click here.
Getting our Children Outside and into Gayman’s Gardens
It has been 3 years since Gayman’s Vegetable Garden was built. As we planned, built, and now work in the garden, we have always strived to let this garden be the teachers’ and the students’ garden. We grow slowly and allow the teachers to mold it into what they want and need — and, we evaluate each lesson in the garden to see how we can make it better for our children.
Over the past 3 years, we have found 2x2 interlocking foam mats to be extremely helpful when working with students in the garden. With individual classes, they’ve allowed for each child to have their own comfortable, clean and dry space to sit. And, with multiple classes, the foam mats provide an outdoor “rug” space to help keep things organized.
In the past, the members of the Earth-Loving Committee have been bringing their own foam mats in from home for each lesson. This year, we are grateful to the Decher Family for donating 50 foam mats to Gayman! Teachers will now be able to sign these mats out from the Library and use them in the Vegetable Garden, The Butterfly Garden, or anywhere else outside. Thank you to Mike, Kim and Coulton Decher for your support and for your enthusiasm for the outdoors!
