Highland Happenings
For the Week of October 19, 2020
From the Principal's Desk
Dear Highland Families,
By now you have more than likely heard that our return to in-person learning plans have been delayed given the trend of increasing cases of COVID-19 in King County. Secondary students (grades 6-12) will only be brought back for broad in-person learning for the second semester of the school year. For the specific community message follow the accompanying link: https://bsd405.org/2020/10/broad-in-person-learning-delayed-until-january/.
I have mixed emotions about this because I really want our students and teachers back in the building, but I also want everyone to stay safe and healthy. We will continue to improve on our remote instructional capabilities, as well as continue to find creative ways to engage students. Your feedback is always appreciated as we strive to provide meaningful learning experiences for all our students. In the meanwhile, please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns you may have.
In health and gratitude,
Susan Thomas
how is my student doing?
Communication about student learning has been especially challenging given our remote status. The hope is that these pieces of information in the weekly newsletter will help families navigate student progress, in addition to communication from teachers.
Teams Assignments - Current work that is due soon or has been completed.
- Open Teams on your student's computer.
- Click on the Assignment icon on the left side of Teams.
- Assignments your student hasn't turned in yet will be listed under "assigned."
- Assignments your student has turned in will be listed under "completed."
- You will receive an email each Sunday morning with the list of assignments that your student received each week. It is a good idea to sit with your student and have them show you the work they completed and turned in based on the emailed list.
ParentVUE (Gradebook) - Work that is completed, teachers have reviewed and a grade OR feedback has been given.
- Grades are posted on ParentVUE for each class. Log in and select the Grade Book option on the left.
- To check assignments click on the class name. Select the "Assignment View" in the upper right corner. This will provide a breakdown of all assignments as well as your student's current grade.
- An "N/A" means that the teacher is still supporting students in working toward the standard and has not yet assessed the standard. Assignments listed should give you an indication as to the level of proficiency your student is showing through their work. If you have questions, please reach out to the teacher.
Standards Based Grading Scale
4 - Exceeding the standard level of knowledge or skill (at grade level)
3- Meeting the standard level of knowledge or skill (at grade level)
2 - Approaching standard level of knowledge or skill (slightly below grade level or inconsistent)
1 - Beginning evidence of knowledge or skills (below grade level and needs additional support to meet standard)

- Training for teachers to integrate cutting-edge Computer Science curriculum in every classroom;
