Week of December 3, 2018
- As readers, we learned that we can make predictions about some ideas and "Lingo" words we will find in our non-fiction books. Lingo words are words associated with a specific topic. For example, as a class we talked about the non-fiction book titled, Tigers. We brainstormed the following "Lingo" words that we would find in the book: prey, fur, stripes, claws, teeth, growl, cub, etc.
- We also discovered that sometimes we will learn new information about a topic with which we are already familiar.
- Then, we learned how to find the definition of new words we may discover in a non-fiction book. Perhaps the author includes a glossary, a definition chart on each page, or an explaining sentence in his writing. We read our individual books and searched for unknown words and found places in the book to determine the word's meaning.
Writers' Workshop~
- As writers, we focused on writing an introduction to our non-fiction books. We learned that the introduction should have a good hook as well as include the important topics our information books will teach our readers.
- We started to write the chapters for our non-fiction books, including important details to teach our readers about our topic.
- During Grammar, we learned about irregular verbs. We learned that some verbs do not have an -ed added to them in order to make them past tense verbs. To make some verbs in the past tense, you spell the verb completely different as in go and went or give and gave.
Mathematicians~
- As mathematicians, we learned more subtraction strategies. Using a number line, we learned to count back to the nearest 10 and then subtract on. For example, to subtract 16 -9...go back to 10 which means you subtracted 6 and then subtract 3 more and you will land on the number 7 so, 16 - 9=7.
- We also learned how to use a number line to "count through 10" to solve subtraction problems. Using the same example subtraction number sentence above, 16-9= ?, you count on from 9 through to 10 which is 1 space. Then hop from 10-16, which is 6 more spaces. Then, you add the total of spaces you moved from 9 through to 16 ~ 1+6=7, so 16 - 9 = 7
- Using iPads, we played the game Kahoot with a partner. To play the game, each partner group connects their iPad to the SmartBoard. Math questions were displayed on the board and partner teams had to determine the correct responses and enter them into their team's iPad. We all loved the interactive game!!
- To help us practice our subtraction facts, we learned a new math game called, Subtraction Top-It! The rules of the game are similar to Addition Top-It! in that each player draws 2 cards from the deck. However, instead if adding the two cards, they subtract the highest numbered from the lowest numbered card. The player with the higher difference wins the round.
- We completed a math review to prepare for our upcoming Unit 3 Assessment.
- During Fun Friday Math Centers, we completed and Exploration. We practice math facts using a Snowflake Fact Wheel. We also practice our money skills by going on a Shopping Spree to purchase items for sale using the correct number of coins..
Science~
- As scientists, we observed our solids and liquids mixtures. We determined that to separate the mixture we could use screens. Once we separated the solids from the liquid, we left the containers to dry up for a few days.
- Yet, for some of the mixtures the solids were no longer present so using a screen would not work. This was the case for the rock salt and mint. So, we just left the liquids in the containers to dry up.
- After a few days, we observed the containers and noticed that all the liquid was gone. We determined the liquid evaporated.
- We carefully observed the dried up solids and documented our observations. We noticed the rice got hard and small again. The same happened to the beans. The sticks and cardboard became harder again and their color went back to the original shade.
- Through further investigation, we discovered the rock salt formed "crystals."
- Some of the other solids, like the chalk and the mint, hardened but did not return to their original size and shape.
Other Activities~
- Katie Kubikian was Star Student of the Week. We enjoyed learning more about Katie and decorating Gingerbread cookies!
- We designed and made our posters for the Barnes & Noble Fundraiser. Be sure to check out our poster below.
- We celebrated Nick Melvin's birthday! Happy Birthday, Nick!
- Our Second Grade December bulletin board is called, My Gift is...Each child made a gift box and inside the box they wrote their gift to the world...a gift that costs no money. For example, My gift is my smile, my friendship, a hug, etc. We decorated the gift boxes with lots of patterned glitter!!Be sure to check out our bulletin board in the second grade hallway.
