Principal's Message
Welcome to November HRM Families!
Thanks to all of you that were able to make it to conferences last week … we hope the time you were able to spend with each teacher was beneficial and informative. We also appreciate the feedback that many of you gave us on our new conference format. For those that couldn't attend or if you feel like you still need more time with your student's teachers, please let us know and we can always set up a meeting, before or after school, if needed. At HRM, one of our commitments as a staff is that "the needs of the student come first" and we know that each of our students is unique and special. Often, when it comes to learning, their unique needs and learning styles means we have to think differently to meet them where they are at, or maybe try a different approach. Your partnership and perspective when it comes to your students is always helpful and appreciated because you know your students the best as parents, so please don't hesitate to let us know if and when you are seeing that our approaches aren't working for your student.
Last week we had a huge celebration with the students and staff … our new fields are finally done! The long wait is over and over the past several days we've been out on the turf fields for break, lunch, and for PE. It's been super awesome to see the kids out on the fields playing football, soccer, doing cartwheels, walking the track … just moving and playing , which middle schoolers definitely need. We're also getting close to having the new building completed. In the next few weeks we've been told we can start using the kitchen and cafeteria, which will be great. Our kitchen staff has been cooking in the new kitchen already and they are loving all the extra space and equipment. If you are able to make it to our principal chat next week on Thursday, November 7th, at 9:00 am … we are planning to conduct a short tour of the new building space. We hope you can make it!
Thank you again for all that you do, as parents, to support your middle school students. As a parent of a middle schooler this year for the first time, I have even more appreciation and respect for your efforts in helping your students navigate these middle school years. What you do in supporting your kids is truly a blessing and we appreciate your partnership through this middle school journey. GO HAWKS!

STUDENT SHOWCASES
Students being showcased this month have emulated the best of our school values. These students are nominated by our adults on campus who see students challenging themselves everyday to succeed. The values we are focusing on are:
* Positive Attitude
* Integrity
* Respect
* Commitment
* Community
6th Grade:
Trinity Evans - Trintity exemplifies each of the HAWKS core values. Her positive attitude is contagious. She acts with integrity at all times. Trinity can be counted on to keep her commitments to herself and others. She treats others with whole-hearted respect and she consistently goes above and beyond to serve her community. Her actions demonstrate self-awareness and others-awareness particularly in the area of service.
Reagan Feldhaus - Reagan is a shining example of the HAWK way. He has a positive attitude in practically every situation. Reagan acts with integrity, and does the right thing, even if no one is looking. He shows whole hearted respect in the way he interacts with teachers and his peers. Reagan keeps his commitments by showing dedication and grit in class. Even when something is challenging, Reagan does not give up. Finally, Reagan serves his community as he constantly looks for opportunities to help his teachers and his peers.
7th Grade:
MaKenna Boles - MaKenna has a positive attitude and a commitment to bettering herself and her work in class. She really focuses on respect and a positive attitude, setting goals around her behavior and attitude in class that in turn allow her to complete her work. Her contributions to the classroom community are appreciated.
Hunter Peterson - Hunter is always demonstrating a positive attitude and keeping his commitments. He comes in each day and gets to work, doing his best on assignments and always responds with a positive, polite attitude when I speak to him. He is kind to others and willing to help, even without being asked. Hunter works hard and is a positive addition to our classroom community.
8th Grade:
Isabel Allen - Isabel represents all of our HAWK core values on a daily basis. Her commitment to her learning, not just her grades, is inspiring to her teachers and her peers. She gives whole hearted respect to all and actively seeks to find ways to make her peers feel included and important. She keeps her commitments by making sure that her work is not only complete, but her best effort. She always has a kind greeting and a smile to brighten your day.
Mason Edwards - Mason is a true HAWK on many levels. He has a quick mind that works to not only succeed academically, but equally focuses on the importance of being respectful to everyone. He engages in his learning and inspires others to rise to new levels. He is a fun friend, and inquisitive learner, a respectful and accountable student, and can be an effective leader when called upon to do so.
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL!!!
CALLING ALL 8TH GRADE PARENTS.......
Every year we have a section in our yearbook dedicated to baby pictures of our eighth grade students. Please send in a digital picture to hrmyearbook@monroe.wednet.edu with your student's full name attached.
HIGHLY CAPABLE PROGRAM
There is one week left to refer students to qualify for highly capable services. Any student in grades K, 1, 3, 5-11 may be referred by staff, family, community members or the students themselves. All students in 2nd and 4th grade are automatically screened and therefore no referral is necessary. The nomination process for the Highly Capable Program is open until – November 8th. When a referral is received, the screening process will be triggered to determine a student’s eligibility for highly capable services. Referred students will be screened in January.
Please visit our Highly Capable Program web page for referral forms, or open the attachments below for more information. You may also contact your school's counselor if more information is needed.
LOST & FOUND OVERFLOWING
Our LOST & FOUND table by the band room and gymnasium is overflowing with coats, jackets, lunch boxes, etc. Please take the time to go through it to see if you are missing anything. All items will be donated over the Thanksgiving weekend.
ATTENDANCE MATTERS
Happy November 1st!! As we get into the months of November and December, we start to hit our holiday season, which may impact student attendance. Please consider the following if you are planning any trips that take you out of town during the holidays:
(1) Ask for a pre-arranged absence form from our office staff if you expect to be gone for longer than 3 consecutive school days. The pre-arranged absence form is attached, FYI.
(2) Keep in mind our expectation is that students are working toward maintaining a 90% attendance rate. As of November 1st, any students who have 9 or more absences will be contacted by school staff to request letters from a physician or medical / mental health provider for any appointments that take place during the school day. (Please see the attached 2019-2020 Attendance Information Letter for specific details about our attendance requirements and processes).
(3) If your child is struggling with their attendance, use the upcoming days off as an opportunity to set short-term attendance goals with them.
(4) As always, please do not hesitate to contact us if you would like to get some extra support in helping your child maintain consistent attendance at school, which is critical to their learning and growth.
To excuse an absence:
· Call (360) 804-4101 or (360) 804-4104 or
· Send in a note with your student or
· Enter on Family Access at www.monroe.wednet.edu Please remember - Early releases due to illness must be checked out through the Health Room.
- All absences must go through the Attendance Office, not through your students’ teachers.
- Absences must be excused within 72 hours or they will remain unexcused.
- Going on vacation? Student must get a “Trip Request Form” from the office for assignments if you will be gone for more than 3 days. This form needs to be signed by teachers, principal and parent.
