December 2021

Dear Viking Parents and Students,

It's hard to believe that this year is quickly coming to an end. We have had considerable challenges to this school year and appreciate all of the patience and support received from our parents. We hope that as this year ends and the new year begins, you take time to enjoy time and moments with your families and friends.

We want to recognize our students this year who have been working hard and made our Principal's list and A/B Honor Roll for the 1st quarter! We celebrated with doughnuts provided by our PTO. We can't wait to see how they do for the 2nd quarter! We also want to recognize our fall sports teams and athletes for their amazing seasons as well! Our football team finished their 6th consecutive winning season as conference champions! Our volleyball and boys soccer teams also finished with seasons to be very proud of. The positive attitudes, hard work, and sportsmanship shown by our student athletes is unmeasured. Our winter sports season has started with our wrestling team and boys and girls basketball teams. We know they will do just as well.

Thank you to those students and parents who donated toys for Toys for Tots as well as items for our food and clothing drive! This has helped many of our own families within our community.

We want to welcome Mrs. Mari-inetta Pavlic, our new school counselor! She will work with students with last names ending in A-L. Mrs. Beth Fortner, our other school counselor, will continue to meet with students with last names ending in M-Z.

Lockers will begin to be assigned to students once we return from our winter break. Students and parents will have to sign a locker agreement form prior to students being assigned a locker. Students are expected to use lockers for their intended purpose. 6th graders have received these forms. 7th and 8th graders will receive them upon their return in January.

I have attached information regarding the Western Harnett/Overhills Area Thrift Shop. This is a very simple way for our school to receive money through donations. You are able to drop of clothing/household donations, needed supplies, and/or volunteer your time in which our school will be credited. Please consider this when cleaning out those closets!

During this school year, we have seen a huge increase of inappropriate student behavior and vandalism. With the support of our parents and school community, we can help establish an expectation of how we interact and treat others. Taking time to discuss with your child how to interact and handle conflict is important. Meeting with your child's teachers is encouraged when there are concerns. Utilizing our school counseling referral form is also encouraged if your child is experiencing difficulties. This can be accessed from our school website at www.harnett.k12.nc.us/hms under the school counseling tab.

One final reminder is that no students should be dropped off or picked up from the parking lot. We have seen an increase in this practice lately. This is a safety issue. Our car rider line moves very quickly and, while convenience is nice, it should not be at the expense of student safety.

Thank you for your continued support! We appreciate our families and look forward to a great 2022! Happy Holidays!
