Students Use Modern Technology to Explore Ancient Chinese Innovations
In December, sixth-grade students from Hillcrest and Wasatch researched innovations from ancient Chinese dynasties. To show what they know, students used a modern innovation, Google Documents, to create an online newspaper. Students collaborated with their peers to write articles about porcelain, tea, kites, silk, wheelbarrows, and more. They shared their newspapers across schools to learn from each other and offer peer reviews.
A Wasatch student commented on the sharing process: “I liked reading Hillcrest’s newspaper. One article had a fact that I completely forgot to write about in my article.”
Students at Wasatch also read Chinese folktales and performed shadow puppet plays for younger grades. To see a Standard-Examiner article and video about the projects, click here.

District Storytelling Auditions
The annual Ogden School District Storytelling Festival is approaching fast. Students honed their stories with library clerks and auditioned this week to be one of three stories selected from each school to participate in the festival. Students were judged by District Teacher Librarians whose evaluations included poise, vocal expression, eye contact, and audience appeal. The DTLs heard many engaging stories from some talented storytellers! Students selected to represent their school will be announced next week. Until then, mark your calendar to hear these student storytellers at OSD’s Storytelling Festival, January 22 at 6:30 p.m. at Ogden High School.
