In order to fully understand today’s Gospel we need to put it into proper context. Peter had just, in the name of the other disciples, recognized their Teacher, Jesus, as the expected Messiah of Israel. “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.” It was a climactic moment in Jesus’ relationship with his disciples. Jesus, however, is quick to explain what being the Messiah really means. Instead of being this fierce warrior-king who would destroy all the enemies of God's people, Jesus was going to be rejected by the leaders of his own people, arrested, tried, condemned, tortured and eventually executed – not by them but by the very hated enemies they expected the Messiah to overthrow.
Peter, like many of us often do, tried to get God to conform to our way of seeing the world instead of His. Peter responded strongly against what Jesus said was to come. Instead of Jesus accepting Peter's rebuttal, He scolds Peter for obstructing God’s way of doing things. Even more, Jesus said that, if anyone wanted to be his follower, then they would have to be prepared to walk the same road of rejection, oppression – and even death.
To give a boost to their morale, to help them see that the way of Jesus would lead to victory and triumph, Jesus takes Peter, James and John to a high mountain. As the disciples watched, Jesus was suddenly transformed. “His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzlingly white.” Then, suddenly, Moses and Elijah are seen talking with Jesus. Their presence is very significant. Their presence and their talking with Jesus indicate their total endorsement of all that Jesus is doing and also of all that he will experience in the days to come. Jesus is the natural continuation of their Jewish tradition and is fully part of it. Therefore, the disciples need have no misgivings about anything they have heard from Jesus about his coming destiny. This event culminates with the voice of God reaffirming that “This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!” Click Here for a surprise. They were learning that, if they wanted to be truly his followers, they must accept this fully and that they themselves must be ready to go the same way.
Being on the mountain was a wonderful experience. “It is good for us to be here,” said Peter but they knew that they had to follow Jesus down off the mountain. Jesus came down from the mountain to be with the people in their pains and sorrows, in their fears and anxieties, in their sicknesses and disabilities, in their sinfulness…And his followers have to do the same. We are to be the salt of the earth, the leaven in the dough, the candle on the lamp stand, helping people to know, understand and experience the love of their God for them.
God bless each of you and your family this week and Lenten Journey.

Alms Jars
During our Lenten journey, the three pillars are meant to help us rebuild and strengthen our bond with God. Praying, Fasting and Alms giving are all expected of us.
To give alms means to provide for those who are less fortunate than us. We, as a school community have so many things to be grateful for. The alms jars in each classroom are an opportunity for our school community to recognize our blessings and help others face and overcome their challenges. Each day, the students are challenged to look at their life and give a donation to the Alms jar in conjunction with something they are blessed with. All funds raised through the Alms Jars this year will be donated to the Ft. Sask. Food Bank.
Here are this weeks challenges.
Monday. For each cell phone in your family, donate 25 cents
Tuesday: If you are in an organized extra-curricular activity, donate $1
Wednesday: For each bed in your house, donate 25 cents
Thursday: Choose to give up a snack today and donate that to the alms jar.
Friday: Choose someone who you would not usually pray for say a special prayer for him/her today and this weekend.
- someone you think could use the extra support.

EICS Transportation
Elk Island Catholic School (EICS) Transportation is pleased to share with the EICS community that there is now increased awareness for parents and guardians regarding EICS bus arrivals and possible delays through our transportation software program BusPlanner. This new app will allow parents and caregivers to see the details of current routes, stops and transfers relating to their children on EICS transportation.
With this new system parents gain access to the following:
- The BusPlanner Parent Portal, located here: https://eics.mybusplanner.ca/Default.aspx which allows parents to view details of the routes, stops and transfers for their children.
- The BusPlanner Notification System for email alerts to parents for issues which impact transportation on a route by route or school by school basis.
- The BusPlanner Delays app which both parents and students can install on a mobile (hand-held) device and allows them to subscribe to and receive BusPlanner notifications through push notifications.
Parents, please take the time to create an account for the BusPlanner Parent Portal and subscription to receive notifications of transportation delays or school closures through email. Please click here for further instructions - thank you.
Please know, it will be through this portal that all notifications will be vetted. There will no longer be emails or phone calls directly from EICS transportation regarding route cancellations or late buses.
Notifications will come to you through Bus Planner, so please subscribe.
In faith,

EICS Demographic and Consent Forms
EICS Demographic Confirmation and Consent Forms are available now on your PowerSchool ParentPortal. Please take a moment to visit your PowerSchool ParentPortal account and complete these forms; one for each child you have attending school with EICS.
Alberta Education requires that we obtain a detailed update of student demographics on an annual basis. School funding from Alberta Education is conditional on us receiving these updates and including them in your student’s record. More importantly, these forms ensure that we have the most current contact information if we need to reach you in event of an emergency.
We certainly appreciate you taking the time to complete these forms. Should you have any questions, or require assistance, please contact Carrie-Lynn in the office at 780-992-0889 and she will be happy to help.

EICS FAMILY WELLNESS WORKER
Service Delivery
Each school is staffed with a Family Wellness Worker (FWW), who works under the direction of their School Principal and the Assistant Superintendent of Faith & Wellness. FWW's receive clinical guidance from a Registered Psychologist.
The primary function of the Family Wellness team is to provide social and emotional support to students and families. Family Wellness Workers meet with students and parents to assess needs, set goals, identify required supports, and plan appropriate interventions.
They collaborate with school system staff and community resources to build a “village” of support around students/families who are struggling.
Referrals
Parental consent is required for FWW services.
Referrals to the Family Wellness Program may be made by students, parents/guardians, school administration, teachers, or other school staff (e.g. school counsellor or collaborative response coordinator).
Parents and guardians can access these services by speaking with the Principal or contacting the school's Family Wellness Worker directly.
