The motto this week is: I pay attention to what I tell myself.
Welcome to Quarter Two of All Things E.Q. The theme for Quarter Two is Self-Talk. Being aware of our self-talk is probably one of the most important things we can do for ourselves.
We can either be empowered or defeated by the words we tell ourselves. Which is why we begin this quarter by encouraging students to pay attention to their self-talk because it is our self-talk that determines our self-worth.
In the first week of Quarter Two, we explore self-talk through mottos. Our definition of a motto is a belief we habitually repeat to ourselves, often without evaluating its effect in our lives. Hopefully, the students will examine any existing mottos they may have about homework, school, mornings or chores with this question:
"Is this motto helping me or hurting me?"
A motto is powerful because we replay it in our head over and over again. If a student has a motto about homework that is negative, that motto is going to play a negative role in that student's life every single time they do their homework.
A fifth grade, E.Q. Ambassador, once shared her motto about doing the dishes, "Dirty dishes are disgusting." After asking herself, "Does this motto help me?" she realized her motto was only making her chore worse. She changed her motto to, "Doing the dishes helps my mom." Sure, she still thinks dirty dishes are disgusting, but her focus is now on how she is helping her mom rather than on the dirty dishes.
Moving from a negative experience to a more positive one can be as easy as changing a motto. We cannot always control the conditions in our life (dirty dishes), but we can always control how we experience those conditions.
An easy way to help your kids uncover any negative mottos they may have is to ask them what activity, or time of day (such as morning, or bedtime) they dislike. Once they have identified something, ask them why they dislike it and you will usually have uncovered a negative motto.
Knowing we have a negative motto, does not mean we will suddenly LOVE dirty dishes, or mornings, or homework. However, it can mean that we are willing to think about our thinking long enough to ask ourselves, “Is this thought helping me, or hurting me?”
Once we determine that the thought isn’t doing us any favors, we may be willing to make some improvements in our thinking. Even small improvements help. For example, we may not be able to shift our thinking from “Mornings are awful” to "Mornings are awesome," but we may be ready to believe “Some mornings are awful.” No, it’s not a home-run, but it may get us on base and when it comes to enjoying our life more, all improvements, even small ones, are welcome.
Have a great week and thanks for your support at home,
