Jack Stuart School - January 2022

Administrator's Message

Happy New Year!

The start of a new year is always exciting of all the possibilities that are before us.

Learning a new skill, exploring new adventures and celebrating all small wins.

It also is a time to look back at all the growth of the previous year. For our students, this past year has been about social-emotional learning strategies in health class, involvement in AMA safety patrol, participating in school sports, building literacy and numeracy skills and greater awareness of living the school pledge - I promise to take care of myself, take care of others and take care of this place.

Please check out our annual Family Literacy week activities. There are a variety of activities that every family can participate in. Family Literacy is a type of literacy education that emphasizes bringing reading and writing into the home and making it a family activity. According to a study conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics, children with a “richer home literacy environment displayed higher levels of reading knowledge and skills than did their counterparts with less rich home literacy environments.” Family literacy is imperative in creating a foundation for children’s learning experiences, and it all starts with the parents. Here are some suggestions for families

  1. Let your child see you reading.

  2. Read more than books together -- read road signs, nutritional labels, etc.

  3. Let your child pick out the books you read together.

  4. Visit the library together.

  5. Ask your child questions about the books or pictures.

  6. Relate the book to your child’s life.

  7. Sing songs and rhymes together with your child.

Covid Daily Health Checklist

Please note that Alberta Health has updated the HEALTH DAILY CHECKLIST for COVID-19. Children should be screened every day by completing this checklist before going to school. The checklist for children is on pages 3 and 4.

Children should be screened every day by completing this checklist before going to school.

Family Literacy Week

Family Literacy Day takes place every January 27 to raise awareness about the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family.

Taking time every day to read or do a learning activity with children is crucial to a child’s development, improving a child’s literacy skills dramatically, and can help a parent improve their skills as well. We encourage our JSS families to spend at least 15 minutes a day enjoying a learning activity together.

Jack Stuart School will be participating in daily events the week of January 24 - 28.

Please view the following PDF to read about activities our school will be participating in and how you can help be involved in this family focused event.

Scholastic Virtual Book Fair

Runs February 1 - 14th

Each year our annual Book Fair generates a great deal of books and educational resources for our school. We receive a portion of sales from every book sold through a book fair. With strict safety practices in place, we are only permitted to run a virtual book fair this year.

Our school has been provided a unique shopping link to our Fair. This link will NOT be live until Feb. 1, however, it can be shared prior to the Fair with family members, friends, neighbors, or anyone who would like to support the school. The fair will run February 1-14. Orders will be shipped directly to our school at no cost. Orders will be sent home with students upon delivery. If you request to pick up your order instead, please email Mrs. Biletski at sbiletski@brsd.ab.ca to make arrangements.
