Just 10 minutes a day can improve fact fluency
Lauren Walton, Mathematics Coach
Knowing addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts is really important in mathematics. When children know their facts they are able to succeed at higher levels. Without automaticity of facts, children can become lost in the math, especially when they reach middle or high school. They work with numbers a lot during the day, but need to practice at home, too! Research has proven that just 10 minutes a day can increase a child’s fact fluency! Here are some ways you can practice, stress-free, at home:
Play games!
Try Roll the Dice — roll two (or more) dice and practice addition or multiplication… try dice with more than six sides for upper grades!
Math Bingo — create your own board and find sums, differences, products, or quotients!
War! But this time it’s not the highest card that wins, but the person who can name the fact first!
Beat the calculator — Roll some dice or flip some cards to come up with a basic fact. One person types it into a calculator while the other uses mental math… try to beat the calculator!
Concentration (or Memory!) — write a fact, like 4 x 5 on a card, and it’s product, 20, on another. Make a whole deck, lay the cards face down, and find their partners!
Go online!
Xtramath is a free fact practice website!
ABCya is a website with lots of games!
Just 10 minutes a day can improve fact fluency. Are you already doing something to practice at home? Reach out and share! We’d love to hear from you! lwalton33@framingham.k12.ma.us
The Book Fair is Coming!
Thank you to Beth Last for organizing this year's book fair. Her goal is to have the book fair open as much as possible to accommodate as many families as are interested in buying. The first week will be previews and students can make wish lists. The second week will be all sales. More information will be coming. Please consider signing up for a shift or two - Beth will be at the school and can answer questions. Remember to make sure your Cori is up to date!

the reluctant dragon
On Friday, 11/15, our students will be viewing the Shakesperience Productions performance of the Reluctant Dragon. The performance is approximately one hour in length.
K, 1 & 2: 10:00am
3 , 4 & 5: 1:30pm
"A shepherd girl races against time and popular opinion to protect and defend her dragon friend from other villagers, St. George the knight, and certain destruction. Inspired by the art of René Magritte, a giant set of Cuisenaire® rods and colorful costumes serve this production as it highlights themes of stereotype and prejudice, encapsulated in environmental sustainability."

care and share
The Jane Shapiro Care and Share began in 1995 as a Dunning School community service project. Each month a specific food item is collected at the school to help keep A Place to Turn's shelves stocked. What a great sharing and learning project! Donations are gathered up by the students and then with help from staff, they are delivered to A Place to Turn. Learn more about A Place to Turn here.
Thank you for your contributions to A Place to Turn during the year. Our monthly food collection makes a huge difference in our community, while teaching our students the importance of giving.
