Lower El Extra!
May 2016 - Edition 6
I hope you will join me in congratulating the third graders on a job well done with their newsletter this year! In celebration that they will now get a much-deserved summer break, I chose a final song I think most of their parents will remember well. Happy summer, everyone! Time to slow life down and enjoy the moments!

Fox Wire Farm
On April 18th, we went to Fox Wire Farm, and it was very exciting! I liked all the animals a lot. The pigs were very cute and so were the alpacas. I loved the hay ride and the horses. The farm was very fun. I think it was a very good experience. The farm was over 200 acres! The farm was amazing, awesome, great! I cannot describe how fun it was! All in all, I think the farm was amazing!
Earth Day
For Earth Day on April 22, 2016, LE1 and LE2 hiked to the Williamsburg Indoor Sports Complex (WISC), and on our way, we collected trash and talked to our friends. We also picked up trash on the fields and filled up three trash bags. Later, we had a picnic lunch. When everyone was done eating, we played at the playground. It was really hot, but it was very fun.
The Maze of Earth
By Ben Agaipour
The Earth is like a beautiful maze
Where roses are living peacefully
like a family of rabbits.
Where mockingbirds are calling
in the sunlight like a blooming flower.
Where calm rivers run
like a swimming otter.
Help save our environment.
The Earth is a Treasure
The Earth is like a never-ending treasure
where colorful fish swim through the deep blue ocean like a beautiful idea,
where jaguars run in the tall grass like flowers growing,
where snakes slither peacefully in the jungle like a moving cloud.
Help keep the Earth a shining treasure!
Poetry Tea
This year both LE1 and LE2 did a poetry tea. LE1 presented their poems on April 26 and LE2 presented on May 6th. We did a rehearsal to get ready for the poetry tea. We memorized one Shel Silverstein and read one personal poem that you wrote yourself. We baked scones for the parents to enjoy at the poetry tea. After the poetry tea was over, we could drink tea and eat scones. We also shared our poetry books with our parents. I enjoyed the poetry tea because we got to talk with our friends and family.
Kenya
We spent last month in Kenya. At the beginning of the month of May, we read a folk tale called Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain. It was about how there was a drought for a while, and the animals migrated, but then the rain came, and the animals came back.
We have also learned to count to ten in Swahili (one: moja, two: mbili, three: tatu, four: nne, five: tano, six: sita, seven: saba, eight: nane, nine: tisa, ten: kumi). On our Kenya shelf, we have a lot of things from Kenya, including books, masks, and wooden animals. I have enjoyed studying Kenya because it was awesome speaking in Swahili!

Country Reports
By Lyon Jones-Rutledge
Each spring the third years present their country reports. They study a country of their choice, write a report, present their report, and share foods from that country. This year people wrote reports about Sri Lanka, Argentina, China, Italy, France, Israel, Brazil, Japan, and Germany. LE 2 did their presentations on May 23rd and LE 1 presented on May 31st. I enjoyed hearing all the reports, and I thought the food tasted delicious. Some of the foods were cannoli, corn, chocolate truffles, pizza, dumplings, rice and curry, salad, and sushi. I really enjoyed learning about all the different countries.
