CFES 4th Grade Updates
Dear CFES 4th Grade Families,
We had another fantastic week of learning and enjoyed seeing the excitement about books and reading!
As we continue to move through the remainder of our curriculum we are also prepping for our 4th grade state assessments. Our goal is working towards mastery! One way that you can help at home is to have your student log on to Education Galaxy for a few minutes each night. Their goal is to complete any assignment with a score of 3 stars in math and reading.
Please be sure your student remembers to bring his/her water bottle and headphones or earbuds to school every day.
Our CFES Great Expectations focus this week will be:
Life Principle: esprit de corps - devotion among members of group for each other and the group’s purpose
Quote: “Alone we can do little. Together we can do much.” - Helen Keller
Creekside Forest Creed
I am proud to be a Creekside Forest Cougar.
I come to school each day respecting my teachers,
my classmates, and myself.
I am responsible for my choices and their results.
I care for others with all my heart.
Never quitting is my #1 tool;
I am a leader at the #1 school.
Go CREEKSIDE!
Please be encouraged to discuss with your child what the CFES Creed and weekly quote and life principle means to them and help make life connections to reinforce.

Math & Science Updates
Math and Science Resources:
Students have access to a variety of resources through Clever including Education Galaxy, IXL, Flocabulary, and their online math/science textbooks. These are great resources for practicing all fourth-grade skills! Practice basic multiplication/division fact fluency regularly.
Math:
Geotown Project: Each student will create their own city, town, or neighborhood using key elements of geometry. This project will be completed at home and taken as a double daily grade. If your student has lost their instructions, there is an additional copy in their math Schoology course. Geotown's are due on Tuesday, April 20th.
This week in math we are wrapping up our Geometry Unit. We will begin the week by finding unknown angles, learning all about symmetry, and then will end our week with a review and test. A significant amount of vocabulary has been covered - please be practicing vocabulary at home to ensure mastery. Students will be identifying, sorting, and classifying two-dimensional figures based on their knowledge and understanding of types of lines and angles.
The geometry Test will be Friday, April 23rd. Click here for the geometry test review.
Students will:
- identify basic geometric 2-D shapes
- describe lines as intersecting, perpendicular, or parallel
- describe angles as acute, right, or obtuse
- identify types of angles and lines in two-dimensional figures
- recognize measure ranges that classify angles as acute or obtuse
- identify triangles as acute, right, and obtuse angles
- classify 2-D figures based on types of lines and types of angles
- determine the measure of an unknown angle formed by two non‐overlapping adjacent angles
- identify and draw one or more lines of symmetry for 2-D figures
Vocabulary: points, lines, line segments, rays, angles, perpendicular lines, intersecting lines, parallel lines, angle, right angle, acute angle, obtuse angle, degree(s), protractor, polygon, triangle, right triangle, acute triangle, obtuse triangle, trapezoid, quadrilateral, rhombus, circle, parallelogram, square, rectangle, pentagon, hexagon, octagon, decagon, vertex, vertices, symmetry, lines of symmetry
Science:
Next week we will be identifying characteristics that relate an offspring with its parent. We will be exploring the difference between learned and inherited traits of plants and animals.
Units 11-13 Test will be Thursday, April 29 and will cover plant and animal adaptations and inherited traits and learned behaviors. Students may review/study vocabulary and concepts through: Education Galaxy, their online textbook, and Flocabulary.
Vocabulary: characteristic, instinctive behaviors, inherited traits, offspring, learned behaviors, traits, generations, structures, environment, camouflage, hibernation, migration, diverse
Language Arts & Social Studies Updates
Reading: Our unit on comparing different genres brings us to poetry! We'll review the elements of poetry while we compare and contrast different text features, author's purpose, make inferences, conclusions, etc.
Writing: Writing Boot Camp is back in the form of an Emergency Room!! Students will be immersed in revising/editing reviews while performing tasks all brilliantly tied to our hospital theme. I promise to take lots of photos as we transform our classroom into a place of detailed work with intense focus and precision. Students will also be writing their final essay prior to the Writing STAAR test on Tuesday, April 27th.
Vocabulary:
Unit 12 resumes next week. Test April 22nd. Please encourage your child to study at home as we work towards familiarity and mastery of these challenging words. Vocabulary Book Online.
Handwriting:
Assignments will be found online and students will work in their blue cursive books. We'll work on a few skills per week. Students may practice at home as well. Cursive is a beautiful skill to learn and become proficient in. It also assists students in READING cursive writing as well.
Social Studies: Wax Museum research begins! Please help your child find 3-5 resources to use for their Wax Museum person starting Monday. You can print resources and/or create a digital list of links in a google document for your child to access. (Franks' Class will have a digital document created in their Schoology on Monday) We will provide extra help here at school so that everyone meets the 3-5 expectation. It might be a good idea to begin thinking about the artifact your child is going to make and the costume they will be wearing in May. Thank you for your support from home!
