2019 Schools of Distinguished Instruction
In the past several years, many of our schools have been honored as Blue Ribbon Schools by the Department of Education. However, we realize that there are some schools that will never be able to achieve this because the criteria limits the selection to those schools that rank in the highest percentiles. It does not recognize the hard work and growth of students from year to year. This is the intent for presenting these awards.
The Terra Nova testing that our students take helps us to identify and recognize growth, potential and capacity to exceed potential. It is this growth and exceeding of academic potential that we are recognizing in identifying the 2019 Archdiocesan Schools of Distinction. This is the second year we have identified schools that have reached these goals.
Using the Normal Curve Equivalent scores we are able to do a comparison between this year’s scores and last year’s scores and determine if a class has shown a full year’s growth. It takes a lot of work and effort on the part of the teachers and students to have the class show a full year’s or more than a full year’s growth in any content area. The schools being honored today have shown a full year’s growth more in more than 90 percent of the areas tested at every level tested.
This year we recognized the following schools for Academic Growth:

Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary School (Chester County)
Holy Cross Catholic School (Delaware County)

There are several schools recognized for exceeding academic potential. During the Standardized testing period, two separate tests are administered—one (InView) measures ability; the other (Terra Nova)measures achievement. This provides us with scores that are identified as “anticipated” and “obtained.” For the schools being honored, the obtained scores met/exceeded the anticipated scores at every grade level in every content area.
Saint Anthony of Padua Regional Catholic School (Philadelphia)
Saint Genevieve School (Montgomery County)
Saint Maximillian Kolbe School (Chester County)
Our Lady of Angels Regional School (Delaware County)
Visitation BVM School (Montgomery County)
There are two schools that meet the criteria as a school of distinction in both categories:
Our Lady of the Angels School, which, despite the fire and upsetment of having to move to temporary quarters, able to achieve this accomplishment.
St. Genevieve School, which continues to show evidence of academic excellence in many areas. St. Genevieve is the only Archdiocesan school which has earned Blue Ribbon distinction three times.
