Jazz had become popular music in america during the 1920s, although older generations considered the music immoral and threatening to old cultural values.Dances such as the Charleston and the black bottom were very popular during the period, and jazz bands typically consisted of seven to twelve musicians.

Born in the south the blues is an African american derived music from the pain of lost love and injustice.Th blues evolved from hymns ,work songs,and field hollers-music used to accompanied spiritual,work and social functions. Blues is the foundation of jazz.

Louis Armstrong
Trumpeter, bandleader and singer Louis Armstrong was an important innovator of early jazz who became one of the pivotal and most influential figures in jazz music. His career spanned five decades, from the 1920s to the 1960s, and different eras in jazz.
Bessie Smith
Nickname ''The empress''of the blues Smith was the most popular female blues singer of the 1920s and 1930s. She is often regarded as one of the greatest singers of her era and, along with Louis Armstrong a major influence on other jazz vocalist.
Count Basie
William James was an organist, bandleader, and composer. His mother taught him to play the piano and he started performing in his teens. Dropping out of school, he learned to operate lights for vaudeville and to improvise accompaniment for silent films at a local movie theater in his home town. By 16 he increasingly played jazz piano at parties, resorts and other venues.
