Chapman's February Newsletter

Mrs. Stokes' Notes
Hello Chapman Families,
February is here and although it is one of the shortest months, it can feel like one of the longest. It seems like right about this time of year, winter seems to be dragging on and the cold and snow has outlived its welcome. For staff, students, or families who are grappling with the mid-winter blues, this is an excellent time to get involved in what is happening at the school. We have many students who have jumped right into skiing, wrestling, volleyball, and the extracurricular academic programming such as chess, card games, and Battle of the Books. These programs offer a way to actively participate in learning and friendships beyond the classroom. We are excited about these programs and are thankful to the coaches and volunteers that are making them happen.
I wanted to highlight a few things that took place in January. First, Chapman hosted its first ever ski meet. It was exciting to see the school and community come together to make this event happen. Mr. Herbst did a lot of footwork to make sure the event was a success. Many of the larger schools offered their appreciation for the meet and were hopeful that it will happen again next year.
Finally, we are getting ready for another round of parent teacher conferences. While academics and behavior will surely be a topic of conversation, please also be aware of your child's attendance. Currently, our overall attendance percentage for the year is 89.57%. While we are improving our attendance percentage, hitting at least 92% is our goal. That would mean that if your child is gone 15 days or less, then they would be meeting that threshold. Attendance is a top indicator for academic success, ensuring that your child is here as much as possible ensures that they are getting the instruction that they need to make academic progress.
Helping students be successful really requires a team approach. I am thankful for how supportive and involved Chapman families are. We appreciate the opportunity to work with you to educate Chapman students. I look forward to seeing you at the many events coming up in the month of February.
With Warm Regards,
Heidi Stokes

January Highlights
5th Grade Art At Pratt Museum
5th grade’s nature photography can be seen at the Pratt Museum in Homer during the month of January! Here is some information about the exhibit: The participatory exhibit, Our Stories, Our Place, will be open at the Pratt from Jan 5-Feb 5. Our community can stop by and contribute their own stories of the Pratt and the great KBay area until the closing of the show. The exhibit will be updated weekly with new stories and has several ways to tell your tale on site and digitally. Please stop in and contribute to our collective voice! "We share our past experiences. We write our journey together. We paint our path forward."
Spelling Bee
Chapman's Spelling Bee was a success! We had 22 students participating. Greg Gall came in 3rd after 9 rounds. Sam Smith and Alex Eberle then went on to battle it out for 29 more rounds. Alex Eberle came in 2nd and Sam Smith received 1st place. Way to go to all Chapman students, it takes a lot of courage to get up in front of a crowd!
