The Clayville Chronicle
September 2019 Edition
From the Desk of Mrs. Francis
The 2019-2020 school year is off to a great start! Thank you to the entire Clayville community for making the opening of school successful and enjoyable. It has been my pleasure welcoming back familiar faces and meeting new students and families. Our students came in rejuvenated and with a positive attitude, ready to learn! Special shout out to our staff for taking their own time to ensure classrooms and shared spaces were ready for students!
At Clayville School, we recognize that student success relies on the support of the entire community. It is important that we cultivate a strong partnership between parents and the school in order to ensure student success. We encourage you to contact us if the need arises and to stay in the know about your student’s studies, activities, and other happenings. Our staff values your active involvement in your child’s education! We are ready for a year full of learning and fun!
Warm Regards,
Mrs. Francis

Attendance Matters!
Help Your Child Succeed in School: Build the Habit of Good Attendance Early
School success goes hand in hand with good attendance!
DID YOU KNOW?
• Starting in kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
• Missing 10 percent (or about 18 days) can make it harder to learn to read.
• Students can still fall behind if they miss just a day or two days every few weeks.
• Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.
• Absences can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up.
Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school—and themselves. Start building this habit in preschool so they learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important. Good attendance will help children do well in high school, college, and at work.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
• Set a regular bed time and morning routine.
• Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
• Find out what day school starts and make sure your child has
the required shots.
• Introduce your child to her teachers and classmates before
school starts to help her transition.
• Don’t let your child stay home unless she is truly sick. Keep in
mind complaints of a stomach ache or headache can be a sign
of anxiety and not a reason to stay home.
• If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to
teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on
how to make her feel comfortable and excited about learning.
• Develop back-up plans for getting to school if something
comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor, or
another parent.
• Avoid medical appointments and extended trips when school
is in session.

Clayville's Attendance Campaign
Our plan is to continue educating parents, students, and the school community about the importance of coming to school, and expand our fun campaign! During the course of the school year, we will encourage students to come to school every day. Each class will earn a number/letter every day the class has perfect attendance. Once "100% Attendance" is spelled out, the class will earn a reward of their choice! In addition, students who have perfect attendance for the month will be invited to participate in an exciting event during the school day!

Curriculum Updates!
American Reading Company: Grades 2 and 3
A key component of the program is the Independent Reading Level Assessment (IRLA), which is a tool that works with every student, at any reading level. The IRLA delivers specific and actionable data that tells the teacher where a student is, why, and the sequence of skills/behaviors she needs to learn next to accelerate her reading growth.
Parents in grades 2 and 3, be on the look out for information about how to support this curriculum at home! We look forward to rolling out the curriculum to the rest of the grade levels, K-8, within the next few years!
Bridges in Mathematics: Grades Kindergarten and 1
District-wide, we are also launching Bridges in Mathematics for students in grades kindergarten and 1. Bridges is a comprehensive curriculum for grades designed to address the new math standards in a way that’s enjoyable and accessible to all learners. The curriculum focuses on developing students’ deep understandings of mathematical concepts, proficiency with key skills, and ability to solve complex and novel problems. Bridges blends direct instruction, structured investigation, and open exploration. It taps into the intelligence and strengths of all students by presenting material that is as linguistically, visually, and kinesthetically rich as it is mathematically powerful. Click below for more information!
Eureka Math: Grades 2-5
Parents, please note, Eureka provides a series of free Parent Tip Sheets at the topic level that include suggested strategies and models, key vocabulary, and tips for how you can support learning at home. Be on the look out for the tip sheets at the beginning of each module!
STEAM Enrichment
Once a week, students will have a 35 minute STEAM enrichment block focused on various activities related to science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. This block of time is in addition to art, music, physical education, and library. A special thanks to Ms. Shannon Donovan, our district STEAM coordinator, Ms. Lowrey, Mr. Ceprano, Ms. Tourgee, and Mrs. Ethier for supporting this important initiative!
Fall Benchmarking Assessments
Clayville Elementary School teachers will complete fall benchmark assessments throughout the first few weeks of September. Staff members will then meet to analyze the data and create instructional groupings designed to provide targeted skill instruction to students with similar strengths and needs. The results of these assessments will be communicated to parents. Please do not hesitate to contact your child's teacher if you have any questions or concerns.
Fall Scholastic Book Fair!
Start With Hello!
We will be kicking off the program by participating in Start With Hello Week: September 23–27. More information about the activities planned for the week will be distributed within the next few weeks! Click below to learn more about Start With Hello.
