Six Hats of Critical Thinking
Pose a problem or issue to your students. Working in small groups of two to four, students think about the problem/issue using Edward de Bono's Six Hats of critical thinking.
The Six Hats are:
White Hat: information known or needed; what are the facts, what is known about the issue? Red Hat: signifies feelings, hunches and intuition; how do students feel about the issue? Black Hat: judgement, the devil's advocate, or why something may not work; what is wrong or flawed or open to challenges? Yellow Hat: symbolizes brightness and optimism; what is good, what are the benefits or what works? Green Hat: focuses on creativity: possibilities, alternatives, and new ideas; what new or innovative ideas can students come up with? Blue Hat: manages the thinking process. This is self-regulating learning.
Students spend several minutes discussing the problem. Wearing a particular Hat, groups can then discuss their outcomes with other groups, or groups can be called on to present their ideas for a particular Hat. Students can also be asked to develop a written solution to the problem that can be summarized in a following period.
Each person can take turns at wearing a Hat or the whole group can progress the Hats together.

Always, Sometimes, Never
Inspired by this video, this strategy can create a game-like atmosphere for students to think critically about a topic by asking them to sort statements/characteristics into 3 groups; always, sometimes, and never. This is a great collaborative activity where, through discussion, students’ explanations can be challenged causing them to think more critically about a topic.
