Notes from the Editor
- Homework: There will be math homework coming home this Tuesday. It'll be due back to school on Thursday.
- Absences/Vacations: It's crazy that we're already halfway through November and nearing the upcoming holidays! I'd like to remind parents that the end of November and all of December are times of assessing students' understandings of our 2nd quarter units. If you plan on taking your child out of school for any reason, please contact me prior so that I can properly prepare your child for missed content. Thank you for your continued support! :)
Health & Wellness by Mrs. Raab, School Nurse
Health Screening will take place Thursday, November 19th for students in grade 3. The students will have their height and weight checked; their vision tested and a quick dental exam. If your child wears glasses or contact lenses, please make sure they are wearing them or bring them for the vision exam part of the screening. If any difficulties are detected, the child will be rescreened at a later date, and the parents will be notified by a letter from the school nurse. All students are required to be screened, unless written documentation is submitted to the school nurse, stating that a similar screening has been done within the last 6 months.
Unity Council Sponsors Thanksgiving Meals
As Thanksgiving approaches, we think of the many families who will go without a warm Thanksgiving meal. Anderson Grove and Unity Council would like to offer support to some of those families in our community. If you would like to participate, please send the appropriate item(s) to class with your child between Monday, November 16 and Wednesday, November 18, 2015.
Miss Johnson and Unity Council will package up the meals to be delivered. Thank you so much for your generous donation!

Current Events
**Note: It's an exciting time in 3rd grade! This year, our students are part of a group helping to pilot new reading, writing, and spelling programs. In writing, we're piloting the newest version of Lucy Calkins materials. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me.**
Reading
At Home: When reading with your child, take time to stop and ask him/her what words the author used to help picture what he/she just read. This should include specific details that can be individual words OR phrases. Don't forget that the author lets us into characters' minds to hear thoughts, too! Want to incorporate the arts? Before (or after) having this discussion with your child, have him/her draw a picture that represents what was just read. Have him/her share why he/she drew what he/she did (words and phrases from the text).
Writing
At Home: Help your child collect important facts that will allow him/her to elaborate on each subtopic within his/her book. Monitor your child's research while online using sources from the school library page, under "3rd Grade Resources." Appropriate sources should be any of the animal-based links.
AG Library Page
Spelling
At Home: When your child practices spelling, have a contest to see who can find the most words using our patterns that are not on our list. This will help students when we assess at the end of the week. (Half of our words on the test are from the sort, the other half use the patterns in unfamiliar words to check understanding of the patterns.)
Math
At Home: Work with your child at home to practice these strategies on the number line. You can do so when your child is working on his/her math homework this week. Don't forget to have your child check out these games to practice addition and subtraction online!
Adding two 3-digit numbers
Adding two 3-digit numbers (story problems)
Subtracting two 3-digit numbers (story problems)
Drag 'N Drop Math
Social Studies
At Home: Have a conversation with your child about rights that your family has. Talk about why those rights are important. Discuss other rights that Americans have and any American hero that took action for the cause (i.e. Martin Luther King, Jr., Susan B. Anthony, Thurgood Marshall, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Ceasar Chávez, etc.)
