March Celebrations Around the World
Women History Month - Mother Jones
Mother Jones- The story of this prominent labor organizer and advocate for the underdog began in County Cork, Ireland, as she immigrated to the United States to escape the desperation of the Great Potato Famine.
After she arrived in the United States, she worked in Chicago and shortly moved to Memphis and soon met and married George Jones; sadly, the yellow fever epidemic in 1867 took the lives of her husband and all four children.
This tragedy saw her move back to Chicago, where she began a dressmaking shop that was frequented by some of the wealthiest women in Chicago and soon began to become involved in the union movement.
As the relentless growth and progress of the Second Industrial Revolution gained steam, Mother Jones found herself traveling from town to town supporting the workers. In 1897 she arrived to help the United Mine Workers ( UMW) in their strike against the coal companies and over the next 25 years, she was imprisoned multiple times in states as disparate as Colorado and West Virginia. In conjunction with her efforts on behalf of adult workers, the plight of child workers led a children's march from Philadelphia to New York City to advocate the abolishment of child labor.
In her later years, she settled in Washington, DC, passing away in 1930.
“My address is like my shoes. It travels with me. I abide where there is a fight against wrong.”
― Mother Jones
Holi
Holika, or Holi for short, is the Hindu Festival of Color.
Origins of Holi
It marks the end of the nippy winter months and the beginning of spring. It celebrates good over evil.
Holika was a demoness in Hindu scriptures, who was burnt to death with the help of God Vishnu. Holika had an annual bonfire the night before Holi. On Holi one forgets their worries, and color can be found everywhere.
How to celebrate Holi?
On the eve of the festival, large pyres are lit in many parts of India to signify the burning of evil spirits. People often throw wood, dried leaves and twigs into bonfires.
On the day of Holi, entire streets and towns turn red, green and yellow as people throw colored powder into the air and splash them on others. Each color carries a meaning. Red, for example, symbolizes love and fertility while green stands for new beginnings.
Something to try: Lassy
North India’s most popular beverage provides much-needed refreshment on Holi. The yogurt-based drink is blended with water and comes in a variety of both sweet and savory flavors. The best lassi has fruits and malai (clotted cream) added… yum!
Let Your Student Show What They Know and What They Can Do!
Testing is a part of learning and lets students show what they know and what they can do. Students won’t “get in trouble” if they don’t meet the state standards. The results of state assessments will not impact a student’s report card or future opportunities.

Did you know...
The current use of No. 2 pencils on standardized tests is a holdover from the 1930s through 1960s, when scanning machines scored answer sheets by detecting electrical conductivity of graphite pencil marks. (“Question 1529: Why Do Scantron-Type Tests Only Read #2 Pencils? Can Other Pencils Work?,” howeverythingworks.org (accessed June 20, 2011).

2023-24 OPEN ENROLLMENT IS NOW UNDERWAY FOR ALL SCHOOLS
Beginning Tuesday, November 1, Greeley-Evans School District 6 will accept applications for students who want to attend a school that is outside their boundary area.
Any parent or guardian interested in enrolling their child in a school outside their home boundary for the 2023-2024 school year must apply during the open enrollment period, which is November 1, 2022, through December 15, 2022. While District 6 is able to accommodate most open enrollment requests, it may not be able to approve requests for enrollment into schools, specific grade levels or special programs that are at or above capacity or cannot fulfill the specific needs of the student.
Parents will be notified via email of their student(s) open enrollment status prior to February 1, 2023. Parents have until February 28, 2023 to accept or deny an offer.
Students currently open-enrolled are eligible to stay at their current school through the highest grade offered at that school and do not need to apply yearly. Also, students approved for open enrollment to a school outside their home boundary, regardless of programming needs, will generally not be provided District 6 transportation services. Those open enrolling to the Tointon Academy of Pre-Engineering from outside the boundary may be eligible for transportation services. Anyone living outside Greeley-Evans School District 6 may open enroll into a District 6 school, but will not be eligible for district transportation.
All open enrollment applications are online. Find out more at www.greeleyschools.org/openenrollment.
