Week Eighteen Update

Hello Parents-

Thank you to all your help getting your students back in the swing of things after Winter Break. They have all been to school on time and prepared for outdoor recess!

We had a wonderful time on our field trip today to The Grove. We'd like to thank the PTO for supporting our trip and paying for our admission. Also, thanks go out to Mrs. Lawrence and Mr. Denk for coming with.

Enjoy your weekend,

Ms. Collins and Mrs. Cucco

We had a special visitor come in this week to help us remember the basics of decimals. Mrs. Tatle, our district's Math Consultant, came in to share some hands-on activities to help us see decimals more clearly. We played a few games that helped us apply our new skills. We learned different strategies to set up bar models to help us solve those tricky word problems.

We will take our test on addition and subtraction of decimals early next week.

Reading Workshop

We have begun our study of Non-fiction texts. Students reviewed the different text features that can be found and are ready to learn about how a non-fiction writer organizes their writing.

We began with looking for the Main Idea as well as supporting evidence. Students read articles they found interesting from "Time for Kids" magazine.

Writing Workshop

Op-Ed is our new focus. We began talking about what an "Op-Ed" piece is and where it can be found. Students practiced writing a reader's response that focused on their opinions. Ask your student about some of the topics that they had opinions about this week!

Social Studies

We are government experts! The class has worked hard to research the "Framers of the Constitution", write about them, and uncover what they thought was so important for starting a new country. Students learned about the three branches of government and why it is so important that there are three. We took our test on Friday, and now we are on to studying Westward Movement.

The Grove

We had a wonderful time on our field trip today. Our visit helped inspire us and spark our interest in pioneer life. We will begin studying Westward Movement next week and now we can't wait!

Students participated in many activities including candle making, weaving, cooking, blacksmithing, butter making, manners, house keeping and eating! Make sure to ask your students what their favorite part was!

Ask your Student about:

  • Our read aloud, The False Prince
  • The field trip to The Grove
  • Getting ready for the musical
  • Outdoor recess
