The West Valley Wolfpack Howler
Spring 2017 - Volume 15 Issue 3
Upcoming Testing Information
During the month of April, 9th and 10th grade students district wide will be taking two different standardized tests. These tests provide students the opportunity to show their understanding of important skills in English language arts, math and science.
The first test, Performance Evaluation for Alaska’s Schools (PEAKS) Assessments, in English language arts and mathematics for 9th and 10th graders, and science for 10th grade, will be a Computer-Based test, given April 4, 5, 6.
The second test, Measures of Academic Progress (MAP), for English language arts and mathematics for 9th and 10th graders will be given between April 25, 26, and 27 in students’ classes. This will be the third time students have taken this assessment this year and can provide valuable growth data for teachers as they review student progress through the end of the year.
Our mission is to provide an excellent education to every student every day, and although these tests are not considered ‘high stakes” tests, they are extremely important because of the valuable information they provide to students and teachers in regard to student learning. With the information gathered from these assessments, we are also better able to inform parents, policy makers and the community how our schools and districts are performing, and we are better able to identify schools in the most need of school improvement efforts and we are able to help gauge the effectiveness of West Valley’s improvement efforts.
If you have any additional questions or concerns, please feel free to contact your student’s counselor of administrator. Parents have the right to make sound educational decisions for their child, so for more information on these assessments, please go to http://education.alaska.gov/tls/assessments/ or http://www.k12northstar.org/Page/6352.
