As the school year is off to a great start, we thought it might be a good time to share some homework tips with you that might make your evenings go a little more smoothly.
Allow your child a healthy snack either before or during homework time. (A hungry learner is a distracted learner.)
Try doing homework at the same time each day.
Establish a quiet and special place to do homework. (Ex. the dining room table, your child’s bedroom) or maybe even some place a little more fun and creative. (Ex. Try the bathtub or build a tent under the dining room table using a blanket.)
Try to make sure you are sitting with them during this time.
Be sure to turn off distractions. (TV, computer, video games, and radio)
Keep supplies you may need close by.
In the event that you have a reluctant learner mix it up a little with something fun.
Turn off the lights and use flashlights or headlamps to read with.
Have them read in a fun accent.
Wear a special “Homework Hat” reserved for homework time only.
Use a plastic monster finger or a Buggle snack as a finger pointer while reading.
All of these things will hopefully go a long way in making your child’s homework experience a more positive one. Feel free to contact the Title 1 teachers anytime for more ideas to make your homework experience a more positive one!
