Music News from Ms. Joncas.
Music News:
It has been an exciting time full of music-making at the Luce! 2020 will be filled with lots more music-making for all our students!
Winter Concert:
Our Winter Concert featuring Chorus, Band, Strings, and Mallet Madness will take place on Thursday, January 16, at 10:00 a.m. We invite families of Chorus, Band, Strings, and Mallet Madness students to join us for an exciting performance in the Luce Cafeteria! Students performing should wear “concert black and white” (black from the waist down, white from the waist up) and bring their instrument on concert day. Please feel free to email me with any questions (joncass@cantonma.org)
Curriculum Notes:
In music, students work towards four anchor standards across all grade levels:
Create - students create their musical ideas, and sometimes record their musical ideas via audio or notation
Perform - students perform a variety of music using voices and instruments
Respond - students respond to musical elements such as steady beat, dynamics (volume), tempo, and meter
Connect - students make connections between music and the world, music and their own lives, or music and other art forms
In 2020, we will continue working to build students’ skills across these four important areas of musicianship through a variety of musical activities.

Luce School Improvement Plan Updates (REPOST)
Priority 1 Updates: Achieving Academic Excellence & Equity
At the Luce Elementary School, all teachers are engaging in year-long PD aligned to the PD concentration of their choice. The PD concentrations span from math to Social-Emotional Learning. Also, 14 Luce teachers voluntarily adopted a new literacy program (Lucy Calkins Reader's & Writer's Workshop), and seven teachers have participated in a new writing program (Lucy Calkins Writer's Workshop).
At this time, we have a total of 5 teachers, who are training to be teacher leaders of their respective Collaborative Learning Groups (CLGs) for their grade teams. They have embarked on training to facilitate their peers in engaging in protocols to look at student work, or to plan for their instructional practice.
Priority 2 Updates: Transforming Teaching & Learning
One of the critical key actions for Priority 2 is staff engaging in peer observations. The goal is to deprivatize instructional practice and learn from colleagues. At this time, we have identified the desire to deprivatize practice and are planning on what that will look like as we enter the new calendar year.
I attached the SIP for your review. We will make updates towards our progress on our priorities and key actions.
