Mrs. Embretson, February 5

Week at a glance...

Reading: I read a mixture of fiction and non-fiction books about Groundhog Day and groundhogs. Our new sight word poem introduced the word come. Your child should have a copy of the poem in their folder to read to you. Ask them to tell you about reading the poem with their partner and a game we played called Jot Thoughts (see pic below). Don't forget to send back Take Home book bags on Fridays to get a new book.

Writing: We continued practicing informative writing this week. We made a chart with a list of topics we could write facts about. The children wrote one fact and one opinion about groundhogs (see pic below).

Math: The children took the Unit 3 math test this week. I am so excited about everyone's progress with subtraction and teen numbers.

Social Studies/Science/Health: We learned about Groundhog Day and shadows. On Monday we made predictions about the groundhog seeing his shadow.

Reminders & Important Information

Papa John's Pizza Night is Wednesday, Feb. 10.

Mr. Crouch's class is collecting new or gently used shoes for Sole Food.

The winner of the Soup drive for People Helping People was Mrs. Marcum's class with 50 cans.

Friday, February 12, PTO Friendship Party. Kindergarten will celebrate their parties 12-1pm. Our 3rd grade buddies are helping us make Valentine boxes. I will send home a class list next week if you want to put names on cards. Most kids simply bring in enough cards for the class, only filling in the "from" section and leaving the "to" section blank. Makes it much easier when passing them out. You can help with the party by donating $3 or attending the festivities.

Box Top contest ends February 25. Our class collected the most during the month of January. Keep those Box Tops coming!
