Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz Biography Writer, Women's Rights Activist, Nun (c. 1651–1695)
Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz was a nun in the 16th century, a self taught scholar, a writer in the latino american colonial period, an advocate for women’s rights, and a Hispanic Baroque. She was born around november 12, 1651 in San Miguel Nepantla, Tepetlixpa, México.
Childhood
Juana Ines Ramirez was born around november 12, 1651. She was born in San Miguel, Mexico. She grew up a hacienda that her mom owned. She grew up without a father. She didn’t go to school but taught herself . “She pleaded her mother to dress her up in boys clothing and let her go to the University of Mexico, but she refused on account of her age.” Her grandpa encouraged her to study. The method she used was if she didn’t learn fast enough she would cut off her hair. she taught herself latin in 20 lessons.
Family
Her mom was Isabel Ramirez and her dad Pedro Manuel de Asbaje. She grew up with her Mom but her dad was absent most of her life. She did have a sister Josefa Maria de Abaje. Her grandfather always was encouraging her to study and learn. Her relationship with her family was loving but they wouldn't let her disguise herself like a boy to go to School. When she was older she thought about getting married but later declared she would never get married so she never married anyone.
Accomplishments
One of her Strengths is that she is very smart. She was like the older female version of Albert Einstein. She was also a woman rights activist so she changed things for women. She was also an author so she inspired many people. She however never won an award for it was the 16th century and back then women "weren't important".Juana Ramirez wrote many books and poems. One is Hombres Necios which expresses her feelings towards men and how they are stubborn and quick to judge women(this is my personal favorite).Although her poems and books are old they are entertaining but hard to comprehend because they are old. Shakespeare old.
Problems/Obstacles
Problems/Obstacles It may seem like her life was easy. She was smart and pretty, but looks and brains isn't everything. She had many obstacles but she overcame them and became a super genius. For example her family was poor and she was a female. So she joined the court when they offered her a spot for being smart. Then she became a nun so she could study and learn. She wasn't the only one affected by being a female all women were but she took advantage of her opportunities and made it very far. There was never an end to her problems for people disliked her and disapproved of her.
Death
She died on April 17,1695 after tending to her sisters Juana died from the disease at the age of 44.
