HOMEWORK

Homework always comes home on Fridays and will be due by the following Friday. Please read your child's planner for more information. In 2nd grade, homework is given a week to complete to honor time with families, as well as the time for busy after school activities. But, it is also important for the students to be responsible in completing it and get into a routine of knowing when their homework is due. Please see your child's teacher with any questions.

Reading

This week in Reading, we will continue to search for the Main Idea of our non-fiction text. Students should be asking, "What is this book (or page) trying to teach me?." We know that a TOPIC is one word, a MAIN IDEA is one sentence, and the details are facts that support the Main Idea in any given text. We will then move into previewing a non-fiction book before we read it, and noticing the text features it provides. Some examples of these are the title, table of contents, headings, photographs, captions, diagrams, and timelines. Each of these features helps us to fully understand the text so that we grow in our knowledge!

Also, your child will be reading the High Frequency Words to their teacher sometime this week. Please watch your child's planner for more details!

Writing

This week in writing, we are continuing our work on our Non-Fiction pieces. We are looking at the great things we have already done in our pieces, and then setting writing goals for the things we have not yet tried in our writing. We need to consider our audience as we write, thinking, "What would they want to know?", and then add vivid descriptions of our topic so that our readers can envision all that we are teaching them.

In grammar, we are reviewing our PROPER nouns, which are specific names of people, places, and things. We will be having a checkup over these this week.

In word study, we will be having a checkup over your child's 2 most recent sorts. These word sorts are geared towards your child's current spelling level, and should be reviewed at home while we do activities with them at school. Each week (except review week like this one!), your child will receive a word sort to take home. Ask your child what a blind sort or a speed sort is, and have them do one for you. The more automatic these patterns become, the better speller your child will become.
