Coaching Tips
Weekly Coaching Tips from Bray
Increasing RIGOR with little prep
1. Present a stimulus: NO answer choices.
2. In the K part of the chart students brain dump everything they "Know just by looking at it". (1-2 minutes)
3. Students share out with their Kagan group in a Round Robin.
4. Students share aloud with the teacher who makes a class KWL chart.
*As share outs happen students star ideas they already have and add new ones to their own chart.
5. In the W part of the chart students write "What questions could be asked about the stimulus?" (1-2 minutes)
6. Repeat steps 3 and 4
7. In the L part of the chart, students solve the problem/answer the question using what they have Learned and then summarize their learning.
Often times students just come to questions or problems and don't take the time to think about what is being asked. This method slows down the thinking process thus allowing deeper understanding of concepts.
I will be reviewing this and other strategies in the next Breaking Bread with Bray on March 31st.
