A Quick Recap Of Our Learning!
Reading Workshop:
Math: In our math workshop this week, students worked on how to prove their thinking when solving addition and subtraction equations with proof drawings. While this seems like it would be an "easy" skill, it is much more involved. Being able to talk about "how" they came to a solution is just as important (if not more) than the solution outcome itself. Please encourage your child to show you his or her "Math Talk" when practicing at home to hear them make connections and strengthen their number sense skills.
Writing: This week we studied character development through realistic fiction books we know well and began to flesh out the main character for our pieces! We talked about internal traits, external traits and spend a lot of time on figuring out what the character wants the most & what is keeping him or her from getting it. The class did an outstanding job digging deeper into their character creation to create internal struggles such as wanting desperately to fit in, feeling different from their peers and dealing with a lot of stress in the characters home life. These are going to be amazing pieces! Please encourage discussion at home about how their story is developing!
WtW: This week was our first independent sort week. Students receive 2 copies of their sort, one for school and one for home. Look for them each week on Monday! The sort routines we do at school can be repeated at home each night as well. Remember the purpose of these sorts are to teach a spelling pattern, not to memorize the words that are included in the sort.
S.S. Thank you for brainstorming potential bills that you'd like to see become law with your student! They were so excited to share their conversations with the class! Today each group selected their bill to law idea! Next week each group will be finding evidence for their idea to support as they take the idea through a legislative process simulation in class.
