4J Office of Equity Update
October 5, 2019
Hello 4J Community
First of all, I want to thank you all for what you do for our students, families and each other on a daily basis.
The work that you do to welcome each and every student and family into our schools, in our hallways, cafeterias, offices and classroom is what will make the difference.
Those positive interactions with students, families and each other are key.
Please take an extra moment today to lean-in to someone's story as you get to know them
by name, by strength and by need.

Indigenous Peoples Day
On Indigenous Peoples Day, we are invited to remember that thousands of nations co-existed throughout the Americas since time immemorial. Their land was stolen and other nations’ flags were put atop it. Those peoples continue to exist to this day, and so do the flags of those who supposedly conquered them. On Indigenous Peoples Day, we’re invited to give extra attention to the fact that Indigenous peoples continue to exist throughout our nation, state, and community to this day.
4J schools are built atop the land of the Kalapuya, a people who continue to live here and impact our community to this day. Indigenous Peoples Day can be one of many reminders about how we are connected to the land we live on and the peoples who have lived in connection to it before most of our ancestors ever arrived.

Help us get the word out about Migrant Education
We know that we have more students in 4J that would qualify for supports but that we are not yet reaching. Services include automatic enrollment in the free meals at school, health insurance, summer school and camp options, academic supports, graduation supports, GED program at Oregon State University, if needed and much more. These services are available for students up until the age of 22.
I am attaching a flyer for you to place in your work space for students and/or their families to have access to. In order to qualify, students and/or one of their family members must have moved for work in the last three years and the work must be in fishing, forestry, mills and/or canneries. Not all migrant education students are part of the Latino Community, but many are.
Students and/or families can take the number and call and/or you can help them call to speak to a Migrant Education Staff Member at: 541-461-8382 or Email: mep@lesd.k12.or.us
